Robert Ellice
General Robert Ellice (13 October 1784 – 18 June 1856) was a British Army officer. Military career Born the son of Scottish merchant and fur trader Alexander Ellice and brother of Edward Ellice and Alexander Ellice, Ellice was commissioned as an ensign on 8 November 1798. He saw action at Buenos Aires in 1807 before becoming Deputy Adjutant-General in Canada in 1809. He went on to be General Officer Commanding Western District in 1840 and General Officer Commanding the British troops in Malta in 1847. He was also colonel of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. Katherine Ellice
Katherine Jane "Janie" Ellice (née Balfour; 1813 – 13 April 1864) was a British diarist and artist. She is most remembered for her chronicle and watercolours of a trip to Canada, in 1838, where she and her sister were taken prisoner during the Battle of Beauharnois. Life She was born in 1813, the second daughter of eight children of Eglantyne Katherine Fordyce (1789–1851) and Sir Robert Balfour. James Frederick Lyon
Lieutenant-General Sir James Frederick Lyon (1775 – 16 October 1842) was a distinguished officer of the British Army who served as Governor of Barbados from 1829 to 1833. Biography James Frederick Lyon was a descendant of the Lyons family, from whom the Lords Glamis were also descended. James Frederick was son of Captain James Lyon, of the 35th Regiment of Foot, and his wife, who was the daughter of James Hamilton. James Frederick was born in 1775, on board a transport-ship that was homeward bound from America, subsequent to the after Battle of Bunker's Hill, at which his father was killed. On 4 August 1791, James Frederick was appointed an Ensign to the 25th Regiment of Foot. Henry Murray (British Army Officer)
General Sir Henry Murray (6 August 1784 – 29 July 1860) was a British Army officer who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. As the younger son of an earl, he is sometimes styled "the Honourable". Biography Murray, born 6 August 1784, was the fourth son of David Murray, 2nd Earl of Mansfield, and his second wife, Louisa, daughter of Charles Cathcart, 9th Lord Cathcart. Murray was commissioned a cornet in the 16th Dragoons on 16 May 1800 and a second lieutenant on 11 June 1801. On 26 June 1801 he was promoted to first lieutenant in the 10th Dragoons, and a captain on 24 August 1802. He was a captain in the 20th Dragoons from 5 November 1802. Between 1805 and 1807 he served as aide-de-camp for his uncle Lord Cathcart in Ireland and Egypt then as a major in the 26th Cameronians during the Walcheren Campaign (1809) and its siege of Flushing. Willoughby Cotton
Lieutenant General Sir Willoughby Cotton (1783 – 4 May 1860) was a British soldier. Family Willoughby Cotton was born in 1783, to Vice-Admiral Rowland Cotton and Elizabeth Aston. They also had a daughter, Sydney Arabella Cotton. Rowland Cotton was from a well-established Chester family, was the second son of Sir Lynch Cotton, 4th Baronet, while Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Sir Willoughby Aston, 5th Baronet Aston, of Aston, Chester. Charles Ellice
General Sir Charles Henry Ellice (10 May 1823 – 12 November 1888) was a former Adjutant-General to the Forces. Life He was born at Florence on 10 May 1823, was second son of General Robert Ellice, the brother of the Right Hon. Edward Ellice, secretary at war, and Eliza Courtney. Military career Having passed through Sandhurst, Charles Ellice was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards on 10 May 1839. He served in Canada in 1840–2, and became lieutenant and captain on 8 August 1845. He exchanged to the 82nd foot on 20 March 1846, and to the 24th foot, of which his father was colonel, on 3 April. He went with that regiment to India in May, but was aide-de-camp to his father (commanding the troops in Malta) from 17 March 1848 to 3 March 1849, and so missed the second Sikh war.
