Robert Cunningham (politician)
Robert Cunningham (May 12, 1836 – July 4, 1874) was a Canadian journalist and Member of Parliament. Cunningham was born in Stewarton, Scotland. He studied at Glasgow College and the University of London. Cunningham moved to Toronto, Canada in 1868 where he began work as a journalist. Cunningham served as a correspondent, covering the Red River Rebellion for the Toronto ''Globe'' and Toronto ''Telegraph''. Cunningham chose to stay in the new province and co-founded his own newspaper, ''The Manitoban''. Cunningham and the newspaper were strong supporters of Liberal causes. He formed close relationships with Métis and francophone community leaders notably Joseph Dubuc and Louis Riel. Cunningham's political allies urged him to run for Parliament 1872 federal election. 3rd Canadian Parliament
The 3rd Canadian Parliament was in session from March 26, 1874, until August 17, 1878. The membership was set by the 1874 federal election on January 22, 1874. It was dissolved prior to the 1878 election. It was controlled by a Liberal Party majority under Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie and the 2nd Canadian Ministry. The Official Opposition was the Conservative/Liberal-Conservative, first led by Sir John A. Macdonald. The Speaker was Timothy Warren Anglin. 1874 Canadian Federal Election
The 1874 Canadian federal election was held on January 22, 1874, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 3rd Parliament of Canada. Sir John A. Macdonald, who had recently been forced out of office as prime minister, and his Conservatives were defeated by the Liberal Party under their new leader Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie. Macdonald's government had been forced to resign on November 5, 1873, because of allegations of corruption relating to the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway (see the Pacific Scandal). The Liberals under Mackenzie formed a government two days later with an election called for January. The Tories were unable to recover from the scandal and lost the election as a result. The election was the first general election after Prince Edward Island's entry into Confederation, and the first to use secret ballots in Canada. Joseph O'Connell Ryan
Joseph O'Connell Ryan (December 18, 1841 – July 26, 1938) was a Canadian politician, barrister and editor. Born in Dunnville, Canada West, the son of John O'Connell and the former Miss Ryan, he was educated at Regiopolis College; he adopted his mother's surname. In 1868, he married Mary Helena Macmanamin. He was editor of the ''British American'' in Kingston in 1870. Ryan was called to the Ontario bar in 1869 and to the Manitoba bar in 1872. He practised law in Portage la Prairie. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as a Member of the Liberal Party in an 1874 by-election to represent the riding of Marquette after losing the election earlier that year to Robert Cunningham. He was acclaimed in a by-election in 1878. From 1882 to 1916, Ryan was judge in the County Court for the Central Judicial District in Manitoba.
