Barrule (band)
Barrule was a Celtic and folk trio from the Isle of Man. The band's three members were: Tomas Callister (fiddle), Jamie Smith (accordion) and Adam Rhodes (bouzouki). Barrule's discography included both original and traditional Manx language songs. In 2014, the trio won "Best Debut" in the Spiral Earth awards and have since performed major festivals including Celtic Connections, WOMAD Charlton Park, Sidmouth, Festival Interceltique de Lorient (where they won the prestigious Trophée Loic Raison), Lowender Peran Festival, Cornwall, and the National Celtic Festival in Melbourne. In the autumn of 2013, Barrule was featured in ''Celtic Family Magazines debut issue. President Of Tynwald
The President of Tynwald (''Eaghtyrane Tinvaal'') is the presiding officer at the sittings of Tynwald Court in Douglas and is elected by the members of Tynwald from amongst their number. The first elected President, Charles Kerruish, was elected in 1990 and held office until his retirement in 2000. The presiding officer remains impartial but has, in the case of a tied vote in the Legislative Council on a division, has a casting vote. The President authorises the Order Paper for sittings, is responsible for controlling the procedure of Tynwald Court and for the authoritative interpretation of its Standing Orders. This is mostly mirrored in the office of the Speaker of the House of Keys. Prior to 1990, the post was held ''ex officio'' by the Lieutenant Governor. Clare Margaret Christian OBE CP (born 11 September 1945) is a Manx politician, who was President of Tynwald until 2016. She is a former member of the Legislative Council and former Health Minister in the Isle of Man Government. Christian is the daughter of Sir Charles Kerruish, President of Tynwald and Chairman of the Executive Council. Her sister is Anne Craine, the former Treasury Minister. She is a graduate of the University of London with a degree in Physics and Chemistry, and previously worked as a research chemist for Cadbury Schweppes. She was also the Island Guide Commissioner from 1991 to 1996. Christian became an MHK at her first attempt for the Ayre constituency in March 1980, but failed to be re-elected in 1986. She was, however, appointed an MLC in 1993 and was appointed Health Minister in 1996, overseeing the construction of the new Noble's Hospital. Tynwald Day ( gv, Laa Tinvaal) is the National Day of the Isle of Man, usually observed on 5 July (if this is a Saturday or Sunday, then on the following Monday). On this day, the Island's legislature, Tynwald, meets at St John's, Isle of Man, St John's, instead of its usual meeting place in Douglas, Isle of Man, Douglas. The session is held partly in the Royal Chapel of St John the Baptist and partly in the open air on the adjacent Tynwald Hill (a small artificial mound). The meeting, which dates back to the 10th century, is known as ''Midsummer Court''. The ''Cooish'' is the name of a festival that promotes Manx language and culture that takes place on the Isle of Man each November. The word 'Cooish' is a Manx word that has many meanings. It can translate to mean a chat, a meeting, a cause, an issue, or a get-together. Bunscoill Ghaelgagh
Bunscoill Ghaelgagh is a government-run Manx-language primary school in St John's, Isle of Man that has enabled 170 children to learn fluent Manx. it is the only school in the world where children are taught their lessons solely in Manx and which allows children to learn the language fluently. Pupils may then go on to Queen Elizabeth II High School in Peel or to their catchment area's high school, where General Certificate of Secondary Education Manx is offered from the age of 12.
