Robert Cain (brewer)
Robert Cain (1826–1907) was the founder of the firm Robert Cain and Sons, a brewer in Liverpool, England. Birth and youth He was born on Spike Island, County Cork, Ireland on 29 April 1826, the son of James Cain (1797–1871), a private soldier in the 88th Foot, a regiment of the British Army. There is some dispute over the identity of Cain's mother. Later family records and stories claim that his mother was Mary Deane, the daughter of Alexander Deane, an architect and mayor of Cork. However, in the entry for his brother William in the Liverpool register of births his mother's maiden name is listed as Mary Kirk (died 1864). Robert Henry Cain
Major Robert Henry Cain VC TD (2 January 1909 – 2 May 1974) was a Manx recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Cain grew up on the Isle of Man and joined the Honourable Artillery Company in 1928. After working overseas he was given an emergency commission into the Army in 1940. He transferred to the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1942, and joined their 2nd Battalion, part of the British 1st Airborne Division. He saw action during the Allied Invasion of Sicily in 1943 and again during the Battle of Arnhem the following year. During the battle Major Cain's company was closely engaged with enemy tanks, self-propelled guns and infantry. Cain continually exposed himself to danger while leading his men and personally dispatched as much enemy armour as possible. Bob Cain
Robert Max "Sugar" Cain (October 16, 1924 – April 8, 1997) was an American Major League Baseball pitcher with the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Browns between 1949 and 1954. He batted and threw left-handed. Cain was the pitcher who issued a base on balls to Eddie Gaedel, whose single plate appearance made him the shortest person to appear in a major league game. Biography Cain was born on October 16, 1924, in Longford, Kansas. He was signed to a contract with the New York Giants in 1943. Cain shut out the New York Yankees in his first major league start in 1949. On April 23, 1952 he matched one-hitters with Bob Feller and won, 1–0 at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. On August 19, 1951, St. Louis Browns owner Bill Veeck put the 3 foot, 7 inch Eddie Gaedel into the game with instructions to hold his bat on his shoulder and not swing. Bob Cain (footballer)
Robert Cain (born 13 February 1866) was a Scottish footballer who played as a full back for a number of clubs, primarily in England. Born in Slamannan, Scotland his most successful period was spent with Sheffield United for whom he played over 200 times but he also spent time at Glasgow Rangers, Everton, Bootle, Tottenham Hotspur and Small Heath before his retirement. Career Club career Cain started his career in his native Scotland where he played as an amateur for both Airdrieonians and Glasgow Rangers. He turned professional in the summer of 1889 when he was offered a contract by Everton and he duly moved south of the border to join the Lancashire club. Making his Football League debut for the club in November 1889 he played a number of games during the rest of the season before joining nearby Bootle in the summer of 1890. Dr. Robert Cane (1807–1858), was born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1807. He was a member of the Repeal Association and the Irish Confederation. He qualified as an M.D. in 1836, became a member of Kilkenny Corporation and was Mayor twice. He was the model for Dr. Kiely in Charles J. Kickham's ''Knocknagow''. He was MD of the University of Glasgow. He influenced James Stephens and Charles Kickham. He corresponded with Thomas Davis. He was visited by Charles Gavan Duffy and by Thomas Carlyle. Robert Cane was educated locally and then worked for a time as an assistant to a pharmacist. He later went on to study medicine at Trinity College Dublin and at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
