Robert A. Siegel
Robert A. Siegel (January 1, 1913 – December 3, 1993), of New York City, was an auctioneer of philatelic material, particularly rare postage stamps and covers. The company he founded still exists and still bears his name. Philatelic auctions Siegel held his first philatelic auction in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1934 he moved his philatelic auction business to New York City and eventually conducted 756 philatelic auctions during his lifetime. In 1964 he conducted his first Rarity Sale. Siegel's subsequent auctions included world-famous classic postage stamps. In 1970 and 1980, he sold the unique British Guiana 1c magenta, for record prices. Philatelic activity Siegel remained active in the American Stamp Dealers Association and served on its board for twelve years. As an expert on rarities, Siegel supported the Philatelic Foundation with his advice and support. American Stamp Dealers Association
The American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) is an international philatelic organization of stamp dealers. History ASDA was founded in 1914 as an association “dedicated to promoting integrity, honesty and reliability, and we are the hobby builders of philately.” The ASDA is structured similarly to other philatelic organizations, with a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, board of directors, general counsel, and various committees and regional chapters. It is located at 217-14 Northern Blvd., Suite 205, Bayside, New York 11361. Membership Membership is open to all dealers and sellers of postage stamps and revenue stamps who agree to abide by the rules and regulations of ASDA. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. The American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame award honors deceased philatelists who have contributed significantly to the field of national and/or international philately. History The APS ''Hall of Fame'' award was founded at the 1940 American Philatelic Society Convention. The award is intended to honor those deceased philatelists who have made significant contributions during their lifetime to the field of philately. British Guiana 1c Magenta
The British Guiana 1c magenta is regarded by many philatelists as the world's most famous rare stamp. It was issued in limited numbers in British Guiana (now Guyana) in 1856, and only one specimen is now known to exist. It is the only major postage stamp ever issued that is not represented in Britain's Royal Philatelic Collection. It is imperforate, printed in black on magenta paper, and it features a sailing ship along with the colony's Latin motto ''"Damus Petimus Que Vicissim"'' (We give and expect in return) in the middle. Four thin lines frame the ship. The stamp's country of issue and value in small black upper case lettering in turn surround the frame. With its US$9,480,000 sale on 17 June 2014 to Stuart Weitzman, this item broke the world record for a single stamp auction price each of the last four times it has been sold.
