Robert Spence (bishop)
Robert William Spence (13 January 1860 – 5 November 1934) was an Australian Roman Catholic clergyman, and the third Roman Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide. Born in Ireland, Spence became a Dominican priest, and after serving as a prior in Kilkenny, moved to Adelaide, Australia in 1898. In 1915, he became Archbishop of Adelaide, a position he held until his death in 1934. Early life Robert Spence was born on 13 January 1860 in Cork, Ireland. The son of Robert Spence and his wife Ellen, née Sullivan, he received his education from the Christian Brothers and Vincentian Fathers before entering the Dominican novitiate in Tallaght, outside Dublin. Having professed in 1878, Spence moved to Lisbon, where he studied for the priesthood at Corpo Santo College. He was ordained a priest on 23 December 1882, and two days later, at Bom Sucesso convent he celebrated the first Dominican high mass in Portugal since religious orders were suppressed there in 1833. Robert Spence (1879 – 1 February 1965) was a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was the member of parliament (MP) for Berwick and Haddington in Scotland from 1923 to 1924. Robert Spence (1811 – February 25, 1868) was a journalist and political figure in Canada West. He was born in Dublin in 1811 and came to Upper Canada in 1836. He taught school in Dundas. In 1846, he launched a newspaper, the ''Dundas Warder and Halton County General Advertiser''. He helped promote the incorporation of Dundas as a town and served on the town council. In 1858, he was elected warden for the United Counties of Wentworth and Halton. In 1854, he was elected to the 5th Parliament of the Province of Canada representing Wentworth as an independent. He became Postmaster General in the government of Allan MacNab and Augustin-Norbert Morin. His acceptance of a cabinet post stirred up resentment among the Clear Grits and he was not re-elected. He introduced reduced rates for mailing newspapers and other improvements to the postal service. Robert (Bob) Spence (born 11 July 1933) is a British engineer and professor emeritus and senior research investigator at the Imperial College London, known for his work in the field of information visualization. Biography Born in Hull, England, Spence received his BSc in engineer in 1954 from the University of London, his Diploma of Imperial College from Imperial College, London in 1955, and in 1959 his PhD in engineering from the University of London.
