Rob Nelson (baseball)
Robert Augustus Nelson (born May 17, 1964) is an American former professional baseball first baseman. He played parts of five seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), from 1986 to 1990, for the Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres. Rob's career continued in the minors, playing in the Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants organizations through 1994, as well as a stint in the Mexican League. In 1995, he was a "replacement player" during the 1994–95 Major League Baseball strike and participated in Spring Training with the replacement squad for the Cleveland Indians. First Baseman
A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes. Flexibility is needed because the first baseman receives throws from the other infielders, the catcher and the pitcher after they have fielded ground balls.
