Road Policing Unit
A roads policing unit (RPU), or a similarly named unit in some forces, is the specialist road traffic police unit of a British police force. Responsibilities RPUs work with the National Police Chiefs' Council roads policing strategy, ''Policing our Roads Together'', which has five strands: * Casualty reduction. * Counter-terrorism. * Reducing anti-social use of the roads. * Denying criminals the use of the roads. * Public reassurance by high visibility patrolling of the road network. RPU officers are responsible for patrolling the main motorways and large roads throughout the territorial police force area. In addition to their general road policing duties, they assist with various operations aimed at improving road safety and are also at the forefront in tackling vehicle crime and the criminal use of the roads network. A highway patrol, or state patrol is either a police unit created primarily for the purpose of overseeing and enforcing traffic safety compliance on roads and highways, or a detail within an existing local or regional police agency that is primarily concerned with such duties. North West Motorway Police Group
The North West Motorway Police Group (NWMPG) provides a regionalised policing service for the motorways within the Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester Police areas. It was established in June 2008 in partnership with the Highways Agency. Operating from bases across the three police areas, NWMPG is made up of over 130 police officers and more than 30 support staff from the three forces. The group is responsible for patrolling a motorway network stretching from the borders with Lancashire in the north to West Mercia and Staffordshire to the south, as well as North Wales to the west and West Yorkshire to the east. It has been modelled on the Central Motorway Police Group, which has operated in the Midlands since 1990. Central Motorway Police Group
The Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) is a co-operative operation between two police forces in the West Midlands of England. Officers from the two forces involved – Staffordshire Police, and West Midlands Police – provide a dedicated policing service on several hundred miles of the motorway network in the Staffordshire and West Midlands police areas. Previously the group also included West Mercia Police and Warwickshire Police. The radio control room is based at Quinton working with National Highways, and central vehicle depot is located adjacent to the M6 at Perry Barr in Birmingham where Thornbridge Avenue passes under the motorway. The depot has direct access onto both the northbound and southbound carriageways of the motorway allowing police vehicles to respond faster to incidents. Automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR; see also other names below) is a technology that uses optical character recognition on images to read vehicle registration plates to create vehicle location data. VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer And Recorder) is a type of device for calculating the speed of a moving vehicle. The first VASCAR device was created in 1966 by Arthur Marshall. It is used by police officers to enforce speed limits, and may be preferred where radar or lidar is illegal, such as some jurisdictions in Pennsylvania, or to prevent detection by those with radar detectors. Operation A VASCAR unit uses a stopwatch and a simple computer. An operator records the moments that a vehicle passes two fixed objects (such as a white circle or square painted on the road) that are a known distance apart.
