The Rivière de Fer à Cheval is a river of Haiti. It is the primary tributary of the Artibonite River. This means that excess flow of water into the river can indirectly cause pressure on the Péligre Dam. This is notably the case in the aftermath of large-scale storms and hurricanes that hit Haiti. Artibonite River
The Artibonite River (Spanish: '' RÃo Artibonito''; Haitian Creole: ''Latibonit'') is the longest river in Haiti, and the longest on the island of Hispaniola. It is also the second-longest river in the Caribbean, behind the Cauto River in Cuba. Forming part of the international border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the river's sources are in the Cordillera Central in the Dominican Republic (68 km); however, most of its length lies in Haiti (253 km). Etymology The name is derived from the TaÃno name of the river, ''Hatibonico''. Course The source of the Artibonite is to the northeast of RÃo Limpio, in the Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic. The mouth of the Artibonite is in Haiti, south of La Grand Saline. It flows into the Gulf of Gonâve. Péligre Dam
The Péligre Dam is a gravity dam located off the Centre department on the Artibonite River of Haiti. At it is the tallest dam in Haiti. The dam was created as a flood-control and an energy-providing measure in the Artibonite River Valley during the 1950s, as part of the Artibonite Valley Agricultural Project. This dam impounds Lake Péligre. Despite its purpose of providing energy throughout Haiti, many contend that the energy provided by the dam is not distributed equitably. Furthermore, the dam has had significant environmental, social, and health consequences on the local people, who were forced to relocate as a result of the dam's completion. These are points of concern to academics, journalists, and human rights activists who, noting heavy North American involvement in the planning and construction of the dam, believe that neoliberal influences may be at play.
