Wadi ( ar, وَادِي, wādī), alternatively ''wād'' ( ar, وَاد), North African Arabic Oued, is the Arabic term traditionally referring to a valley. In some instances, it may refer to a wet (ephemeral) riverbed that contains water only when heavy rain occurs. Etymology The term ' is very widely found in Arabic toponyms. Rivier University
Rivier University is a private Catholic liberal arts university in Nashua, New Hampshire. Rivier is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education and approved by the New Hampshire Department of Education. History Rivier University, formerly Rivier College, was founded in 1933 by the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary in Hudson, New Hampshire. The congregation named the college in honor of its founder, Anne-Marie Rivier. In 1941, the college moved to its present campus location in Nashua. The university was incorporated in 1935 and granted the authority to offer both graduate and undergraduate level programs. Anne-Marie Rivier
Anne-Marie Rivier (19 December 1768 – 3 February 1838) was a French Catholic nun and the foundress of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary. Rivier's focus was on education and she opened a school just before the beginning of the French Revolution which saw her school confiscated. The end of the revolution allowed for her to resume her educational inclinations and she also founded her religious order to take care of the education of orphans and other children who needed education. Her beatification process began in mid-1853 under Pope Pius IX who referred to her as "The Woman-Apostle" while naming her a Servant of God. Pope Leo XIII later named her to be Venerable in 1890 while Pope John Paul II later beatified her in 1982. She was canonized by Pope Francis on 15 May 2022 in Rome. Hélène Rivier
Hélène Rivier (May 25, 1902 – February 11, 1986) was a Swiss librarian. The daughter of Emile Théodore Rivier, a minister, and Annie Rose, she was born in Porrentruy and attended the Ecole de bibliothécaires in Geneva, graduating in 1928. In 1931, she established the Bibliothèque Moderne at Geneva, the first free lending library available to the public in Switzerland. She was the first director of the Bibliothèque Municipale in Geneva, serving from 1941 to 1966. She also established library service for the sick in the canton hospital and the Saint-Antoine prison, set up a system of local library branches and established the first Swiss bookmobile A bookmobile or mobile library is a vehicle designed for use as a library. Jean Rivier
Alexis Fernand Félix Jean Rivier (21 July 1896 – 6 November 1987) was a French composer of classical music in the neoclassical style. The son of Henri Rivier, a co-inventor of Armenian paper, he composed over two hundred works, including music for orchestra, chamber groups, chorus, piano, and solo instruments. Rivier served as Professor of Composition at the Paris Conservatory from 1948 until his retirement in 1966. During the period 1948–1962, he shared this position with famous composer Darius Milhaud. Three of his notable students at the Paris Conservatory were Gareth Walters, Pedro Ipuche Riva, and Gerd Boder. William Rivier (12 December 1882 – 19 November 1974) was a Swiss mathematician, philosopher, and chess player. Rivier was born in Bienne to a pastor in the Free Church of Vaud. One of his siblings was the artist Louis Rivier. William Rivier studied mathematics at the University of Nancy under Élie Cartan and subsequently became a mathematics teacher. He drew on his mathematical background for his later philosophical work, which he published in several volumes from 1937 until his death in 1974. Rivier was also a noted chess player. He played for Switzerland in the 2nd Chess Olympiad at The Hague 1928, where he put up a score of +5 –1 =5 (68.2%) and took individual prize for 6th place. He also played in the 4th Chess Olympiad at Prague 1931.
