Riverview Health Centre is a community hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It was founded in 1911 by the City of Winnipeg as the Winnipeg Municipal Hospital. The hospital consisted of two buildings called the King Edward Memorial Hospital which was built in 1911 and the King George Hospital built in 1914. The Princess Elizabeth Hospital was added in 1950 as the first long-term care facility in Canada. In 1983 the first purpose-built Geriatric Day Hospital was opened as an outpatient rehabilitation centre for seniors. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA; french: Office régional de la santé de Winnipeg, ORSW) is the governing body for healthcare regulation for the City of Winnipeg, the northern community of Churchill, and the Rural Municipalities of East and West St. Paul, in the Canadian province of Manitoba. 1997 Red River Flood
The Red River flood of 1997 was a major flood that occurred in April and May 1997 along the Red River of the North in Minnesota, North Dakota, and southern Manitoba. It was the most severe flood of the river since 1826. The flood reached throughout the Red River Valley, affecting the cities of Fargo and Winnipeg, but none so greatly as Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, where floodwaters reached more than inland. They inundated virtually everything in the twin communities. Total damages for the Red River region were US$3.5 billion. The flood was the result of abundant snowfall and extreme temperatures. In Grand Forks, thousands of people, including Air Force personnel from Grand Forks Air Force Base, tried to prepare for the 1997 flood by building sandbag dikes. Robert Steen
Robert Ashley Steen, (August 12, 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba – May 10, 1979) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba, Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1966 to 1969, and later served as the 38th Mayor of Winnipeg from 1977 to 1979. Steen was educated at the University of Manitoba and the Manitoba Law School, was called to the Manitoba bar in 1959 and worked as a barrister and solicitor. In March 1979, he was appointed Queen's Counsel for his exceptional merit and contribution to the legal profession. His brother Warren Steen, Warren also served on Winnipeg city council and in the provincial assembly.
