River Street Historic District (New Haven, Connecticut)
The River Street Historic District encompasses a historic industrial area in the Fair Haven section of New Haven, Connecticut. Located south of Chapel Street between James Street and Blatchley Avenue, the industrial buildings here date to New Haven's growth as a major industrial center between the American Civil War and World War I, with significant emphasis on metalworking businesses. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Description and history The River Street Historic District occupies about on the southern end of the Fair Haven Peninsula, with harbor frontage to the south. It includes three large industrial complexes dating from the 1870s to the 1910s, with most buildings constructed out of load-bearing brick or masonry. New Haven is a city in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It is located on New Haven Harbor on the northern shore of Long Island Sound in New Haven County, Connecticut and is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Fair Haven (New Haven)
Fair Haven is a neighborhood in the eastern part of the city of New Haven, Connecticut, between the Mill and Quinnipiac rivers. The northeast section of the neighborhood is also known as Chatham Square. Fair Haven is located about two miles east of the New Haven Green comprising New Haven wards 14, 15, 16, and a portion of 8. It is bounded on the east and south by the Quinnipiac River, on the west by the Mill River, on the northwest by Amtrak railroad tracks, and on the north by I-91 (in the vicinity of Exit 7). The main through routes of the area are Grand Avenue, Blatchley Avenue, and Ferry Street. In its early days, the area was called by a succession of names including Farmes, East Farmes, The Neck, Dragon, and Clamtown. American Civil War
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States. Dutee Wilcox Flint (December 19, 1882 – March 31, 1961) was a Rhode Island state senator and business magnate in the Rhode Island and Connecticut area. Business career Flint was primarily invested in the automobile industry, but also owned a number of radio stations, including current WPRO, and the Dutee W. Flint Oil Company. By the beginning of the 1930s, however, he was not the owner of many of these assets; the Dutee W.
