River Landscape (Annibale Carracci)
''River Landscape'' is a painting by the Italian artist Annibale Carracci which is part of the Samuel H. Kress Collection in the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. It was painted in Italy circa 1590 when Carracci and his brother and cousin were pioneering the creation of naturalistic landscape works in which the countryside was depicted for its own sake, rather than as a stylised backdrop to a religious or mythological subject. It can be compared in this respect with his earlier paintings ''Fishing'' and ''Hunting'', now both in the Louvre. The painting would have been created in the studio from sketches made in the field. Characteristically of Carracci's landscapes a dark foreground frames the distant view, the perspective enhanced by trees of diminishing height. Annibale Carracci
Annibale Carracci (; November 3, 1560 – July 15, 1609) was an Italian painter and instructor, active in Bologna and later in Rome. Along with his brother and cousin, Annibale was one of the progenitors, if not founders of a leading strand of the Baroque style, borrowing from styles from both north and south of their native city, and aspiring for a return to classical monumentality, but adding a more vital dynamism. Painters working under Annibale at the gallery of the Palazzo Farnese would be highly influential in Roman painting for decades. Early career Annibale Carracci was born in Bologna, and in all likelihood was first apprenticed within his family. John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick
John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick (16 February 1770 – 20 January 1859) was an English peer, landowner and collector of art works. Rushout was the son of John Rushout, 1st Baron Northwick and his wife Rebecca Bowles. He was born at St James', Westminster, London and was educated at Newcome's School at Hackney (rather than Eton like his father) and did not then go to an English university. Instead he was sent to Neuchâtel in Switzerland. In 1790 he visited Italy and while touring the continent became friends with many eminent men including Edward Gibbon, Horatio Nelson, Sir William Hamilton (diplomat) and his wife Emma Hamilton, Richard Payne Knight, and the Italian artists Antonio Canova, and Vincenzo Camuccini. Thirlestaine House
Thirlestaine House is a Grade I listed building in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. History Thirlestaine House was started in 1820 by J.R. Scott (an amateur architect) for his own use. In 1838 the unfinished building was bought by John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick, Lord Northwick and extended by the addition of an extra wing to house his Northwick Park, Gloucestershire#Northwick Park collection, art collection. His whole collection, including pictures still at Northwick, was sold on his death, intestate and childless, in 1859. The house itself was bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bt and used to house his huge book collection, which he transferred from his seat at Middlehill. The house was afterwards inherited by his family. Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (baptized June 6, 1599August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age.
