Rita Rato Araújo Fonseca (born 5 January 1983, in Estremoz) is a Portuguese politician, who was a member of the Assembly of the Republic from 2009 to 2019. She has a bachelor's degree in Political Science and International Relations from the New University of Lisbon NOVA University Lisbon ( pt, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, ), or just NOVA, is a Portuguese public university whose rectorate is located in Campolide, Lisbon. Founded in 1973, it is the newest of the public universities in the Portuguese capital ... and is a member of the Portuguese Communist Party. In July 2020, Rato was appointed director of the Aljube museum. This is a former Estado Novo political prison that now serves as a museum in honour of those who opposed the regime. The ''Estado Novo'' (, lit. "New State") was the corporatist Portuguese state installed in 1933. It evolved from the ''Ditadura Nacional'' ("National Dictatorship") formed after the ''coup d'état'' of 28 May 1926 against the democratic but unstable First Republic. A nova (plural novae or novas) is a transient astronomical event that causes the sudden appearance of a bright, apparently "new" star (hence the name "nova", which is Latin for "new") that slowly fades over weeks or months. Cadeia do Aljube is a former prison in Lisbon, Portugal, now serving as a museum. Situated near the Sé Cathedral in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, the prison housed those convicted through the Ecclesiastical Forum until 1820, then women accused of common crimes until the end of the 1920s. From 1928 until its closure in 1965, political prisoners of the '' Ditadura Nacional'' and '' Estado Novo'' were held there.
