Rita Easterling
Rita Gail Easterling (born July 26, 1955) is an American former basketball player. Called the ''Queen of the Floor Burns'', she played college basketball for Mississippi College where she was named Kodak All-American in 1977. She later played professionally for the Chicago Hustle in the Women's Professional Basketball League from 1978 to 1981 and was named the leagues MVP and All-Star MVP in 1979. Prior to college, Easterling played basketball at Morton High School and in 1973 she was named Mississippi Miss Basketball. In 2011, Easterling was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Coaching career Easterling served as an assistant coach with the Mississippi College women's basketball team after graduation. Following her professional career, she returned to Mississippi, first as an assistant coach but took over as head coach in 1983. 1979 WBL All-Star Game
The 1979 WBL All-Star Game was a basketball All-star game which was played on March 14, 1979, at the Felt Forum in New York, during the 1978–79 WBL season. The East team was coached by Don Knoedel of the Houston Angels while the Midwest was coached by Doug Bruno of the Chicago Hustle. Three players were selected from each of the eight teams in the league. After falling behind 18–30 after the first quarter, the East team won the game, 112–99, behind Althea Gwyn's 19 points and 16 rebounds. Rita Easterling of the Midwest team was named MVP after scoring 19 points and handing out 18 assists. Midwest's Debra Waddy-Rossow finished with a game high 26 points. This was the inaugural All-Star Game of the Women's Professional Basketball League, which was in its first season. The ''Hattiesburg American'' is a U.S. newspaper based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, that serves readers in Forrest, Lamar, and surrounding counties in south-central Mississippi. The newspaper is owned by Gannett. History The ''Hattiesburg American'' was founded in 1897 as a weekly newspaper, the ''Hattiesburg Progress''.
