Risinghill School
Risinghill School was a progressive co-educational comprehensive school, comprehensive secondary school that opened in Islington, north London, on 3 May 1960 and closed four and a half years later. A book chronicling its demise made publishing history in 1968 by becoming the UK's first non-fiction best-seller. The school Risinghill School was an early purpose-built comprehensive school under the headmastership of Michael Duane (head teacher), Michael Duane, a charismatic advocate of progressive and non-authoritarian education. Pupils received religious education through Saint Silas Church, which was part of Risinghill. Lessons included technical and craft skills, taught through dual or multi-purpose creative methods. The school's methods prompted criticism in the media and disputes with the London County Council. The school was closed down in 1965, ostensibly because it had become unpopular with parents. William Michael Duane (26 January 1915 – 21 January 1997) was an Irish born, British teacher known for his progressive educational views, his belief in inclusivity and a multi-racial approach, his encouragement of informal relationships between staff and pupils and his opposition to corporal punishment. He was also the head of the controversial short-lived Risinghill School in Islington. Biography Early life and education Duane was born on 26 January 1915 in Dublin, Ireland to John Joseph Duane (1888–1922) and Mary Ellen Fogarty (1893-1975). When Duane was 7 his father died when he was shot in Waterford during the Civil War; three years later Duane and his mother moved to London. Leila Berg (12 November 1917 – 17 April 2012) was an English children's author. She was also known as a journalist and a writer on education and children's rights. Berg was a recipient of the Eleanor Farjeon Award. Biography Berg was brought up in Salford, Lancashire, in a Jewish doctor's family.
