Rising (Donovan Album)
''Rising'' is the third live album, and twentieth album overall, from British singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released on Permanent Records in 1990 (LP and CD). The live versions of Donovan's hits guaranteed that ''Rising'' would receive a release in both the United States and United Kingdom. ''Rising'' was retitled ''The Classics Live'' in the United States, ''25 Years in Concert'' in Europe and ''Atlantis'' in the UK for marketing reasons. Since the release of ''Rising'', there have been many reissues of the songs from the album under many different titles. ''Rising'' was supposedly recorded sporadically from 1982 through 1986 at various live concerts during different world tours. However, after careful research the songs on the album came from are revealed as a U.S. tour in 1971 and from the Cambridge Folk Festival of 1981. History Although Donovan's albums had all but disappeared from the British and American markets by the early 1980s, his live appearances still attracted ...

Donovan
Donovan Phillips Leitch (born 10 May 1946), known mononymously as Donovan, is a Scottish musician, songwriter, and record producer. He developed an eclectic and distinctive style that blended folk, jazz, pop, psychedelic rock and world music (notably calypso). He has lived in Scotland, Hertfordshire (England), London, California, and—since at least 2008—in County Cork, Ireland, with his family. Emerging from the British folk scene, Donovan reached fame in the United Kingdom in early 1965 with live performances on the pop TV series ''Ready Steady Go!''. Having signed with Pye Records in 1965, he recorded singles and two albums in the folk vein for Hickory Records, after which he signed to CBS/Epic in the US—the first signing by the company's new vice-president Clive Davis—and became more successful internationally. He began a long and successful collaboration with leading British independent record producer Mickie Most, scoring multiple hit singles and albums in ...

Atlantis (Donovan Song)
"Atlantis" is a song written and performed by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released as a single in 1968 and became a worldwide success; becoming a 1 hit in the Netherlands and in Switzerland in 1969, No. 2 in Germany and South Africa, No. 12 in Canada, and No. 4 in Austria. In the United States, where it served as the B-side to "To Susan on the West Coast, Waiting", it reached No. 7, whilst in the singer's native country the single managed only a modest No. 23 placing. In 2001, Donovan and German pop band No Angels re-recorded the track for the closing credits of the Walt Disney Feature Animation picture '' Atlantis: The Lost Empire'' (2001). Included on a concomitant album for the German-speaking music market, it was once more released as a single and re-entered the top five in Austria and Germany. Original by Donovan Theme The introduction of song is a quiet monologue spoken over the song's repeated musical melody, telling of the mythological antediluvian civiliz ...

Allmusic
AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide and AMG) is an American online music database. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Initiated in 1991, the database was first made available on the Internet in 1994. AllMusic is owned by RhythmOne. History AllMusic was launched as ''All Music Guide'' by Michael Erlewine, a "compulsive archivist, noted astrologer, Buddhist scholar and musician". He became interested in using computers for his astrological work in the mid-1970s and founded a software company, Matrix, in 1977. In the early 1990s, as CDs replaced LPs as the dominant format for recorded music, Erlewine purchased what he thought was a CD of early recordings by Little Richard. After buying it he discovered it was a "flaccid latter-day rehash". Frustrated with the labeling, he researched using metadata to create a music guide. In 1990, in Big Rapids, Michigan, he founded ''All Music Guide' ...

"Laserlight" is a song by English singer-songwriter Jessie J featuring French DJ David Guetta, taken from the platinum edition of Jessie J's debut studio album, '' Who You Are''. The artists co-wrote the song with The Invisible Men, Giorgio Tuinfort, and Frédéric Riesterer. The song was released on 13 May 2012 in the United Kingdom, as the seventh overall and final single from the album. Ahead of its official release, "Laserlight" became Jessie J's sixth top 10 hit in the UK – peaking at number five – making her the first British female to have six top 10 singles from one album. Background and composition The song was written by Jessie J, The Invisible Men, David Guetta, Giorgio Tuinfort and Frédéric Riesterer and produced by Guetta, Tuinfort and Riesterer. After Jessie provided guest vocals on Guetta's track "Repeat", he offered to return the favour, and as such, the pair wrote "Laserlight" for the platinum edition of Jessie's debut studio album, ''"Who You Are"''. Daniel Henry Edward Thompson (born 4 April 1939) is an English multi-instrumentalist best known as a double bassist. He has had a long musical career playing with a large variety of other musicians, particularly Richard Thompson and John Martyn. For four years, between 1964 and 1967, he was a member of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, led a trio that included guitarist John McLaughlin, and was a founding member of the British folk-jazz band Pentangle. Since 1987, he has also recorded four solo albums. He converted to Islam in 1990. Biography and career Thompson was born in Teignmouth, Devon, England. His father, a miner, joined the Royal Navy at the start of World War II and was lost in action whilst crewing submarines. Essence To Essence
''Essence to Essence'' is the eleventh studio album, and thirteenth album overall, from British singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in both the UK (Epic SEPC 69050) and the US (Epic KE 32800) in December 1973. History By late 1973, Donovan abandoned the style of glam rock featured on his ''Cosmic Wheels'' album earlier that year. Andrew Loog Oldham was brought in (replacing Mickie Most) to co-produce Donovan's next album, which would highlight the subdued style of his previous work. Many of the songs were released on '' Live in Japan: Spring Tour 1973'', but that album was not released outside Japan. In a clear sign of Donovan's waning popularity, ''Essence to Essence'' became the third Donovan album after '' H.M.S. Donovan'' and earlier ''Fairytale'' to fail to reach the top 25 in the U.S. charts. ''Essence to Essence'' missed the UK album charts altogether and peaked at No. 174 in the United States. On ''Essence to Essence'', Donovan focuses on spirituality and meditat ...

Mellow Yellow (album)
''Mellow Yellow'' is the fourth album from Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the US in February 1967 ( Epic Records LN 24239 (monaural) / BN 26239 (rechanneled stereo), but not released in the UK because of a continuing contractual dispute that also prevented '' Sunshine Superman'' from a UK release. In June 1967, a cross-section of both albums was released as ''Sunshine Superman'' (Pye Records NPL 18181) in the UK. "Mellow Yellow" was the name of Donovan's hit single released the previous November. History The songs on ''Mellow Yellow'' represent a transition in Donovan's writing. Donovan's songs had previously illustrated his infatuation with an ability to define the mid-sixties pop music scene. On ''Mellow Yellow'' this is still evident in "Sunny South Kensington", "Museum" (originally recorded for the '' Sunshine Superman album'' and rerecorded for ''Mellow Yellow'') and the title track, but is also tempered with world-weary observations of that scene (" ...

7-Tease
''7-Tease'' is an album by the British singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the US (Epic PE 33245) in November 1974 and in the UK (Epic SEPC 69104) in January 1975. The album peaked at No. 135 on the ''Billboard'' 200. History After the low chart success of ''Essence to Essence'', Donovan entered the studio in late 1974 with a different producer and a new set of songs. The songs were originally intended for use as part of an operetta about the preceding 10 years of Donovan's life and times. Some of the songs on ''7-Tease'' feature lyrical lines or melodies from earlier Donovan songs. "The Voice of Protest" features a line about a ship going "all on her starry way", in a direct lift from a line in "The Voyage of the Moon" on '' H.M.S. Donovan''. The melody on "How Silly" is nearly identical to "A Funny Man" from ''H.M.S. Donovan''. Critical reception AllMusic wrote that "a fair hearing of ''7-Tease'' reveals an album steeped in disillusionment, yet built upon beautifu ...

Laléna
"Laléna" (also spelled "Lalena") is the title of a composition by Donovan. ''Billboard'' described the single as a "beautiful and intriguing original ballad." ''Cash Box'' said that "sweet strings accent a hauntingly beautiful folk-flavored ballad which gets stronger with each listen." History In 2004, Donovan revealed that the song was inspired by the actress Lotte Lenya and that the song's lyrics, addressed to a societally marginalized woman, were Donovan's reaction to Lenya's character in the film version of ''The Threepenny Opera'': "Laléna" was recorded in a September 1968 session at Olympic Studios produced by Mickie Most, session personnel being Harold McNair on flute, Bobby Orr on drums, Danny Thompson on bass with the Royal Philharmonic strings; John Cameron was the arranger. Donovan was not working toward an album when he recorded "Laléna", having completed the tracks which would comprise his ''The Hurdy Gurdy Man'' album in April 1968; that album and the single ...

Sailing Homeward
Sailing employs the wind—acting on sails, wingsails or kites—to propel a craft on the surface of the ''water'' (sailing ship, sailboat, raft, windsurfer, or kitesurfer), on ''ice'' (iceboat) or on ''land'' (land yacht) over a chosen course, which is often part of a larger plan of navigation. From prehistory until the second half of the 19th century, sailing craft were the primary means of maritime trade and transportation; exploration across the seas and oceans was reliant on sail for anything other than the shortest distances. Naval power in this period used sail to varying degrees depending on the current technology, culminating in the gun-armed sailing warships of the Age of Sail. Sail was slowly replaced by steam as the method of propulsion for ships over the latter part of the 19th century – seeing a gradual improvement in the technology of steam through a number of stepwise developments. Steam allowed scheduled services that ran at higher average speeds than sailing ...
