Risdon, Tasmania
Risdon is a suburb of Hobart, capital city of Tasmania. It is west of Risdon Vale. History It derives its name from Captain William Bellamy Risdon, second officer of the ship ''Duke of Clarence'', which visited the area as part of Sir John Hayes' expedition in 1793. Risdon Post Office opened on 1 July 1864. It was named "Gregson" during 1911. Zinc works Between 1916 and 1920 Electrolytic Zinc developed a zinc refinery, known as the "Risdon works", and an eponymously named suburb. In 1956, as part of the refinery complex, EZ started a sulphate of ammonia plant. The owners of the plant in 1987 considered expansion of the refinery. Division Of Franklin
The Division of Franklin is an Australian electoral division in Tasmania. The division is located in southern Tasmania around the state capital, Hobart. It is the only non-contiguous federal electoral division in Australia, with the two parts of the division separated by the Division of Clark, based around central Hobart. As at the 2016 election, slightly more than half its electors are located on the eastern shore of the River Derwent, incorporating the entire City of Clarence and the suburb of Old Beach from Brighton Council. The remaining electors in the division are drawn from the southern parts of the Kingborough Council, generally south of the Huon Highway and including Bruny Island, and the entire Huon Valley Council. Bowen Bridge
The Bowen Bridge is a four-lane road bridge crossing the Derwent River in Tasmania, Australia. Description The bridge lies on the river about halfway between the Tasman Bridge and the Bridgewater Bridge. The bridge links the East Derwent Highway with the Brooker Highway (as Goodwood Road) at Glenorchy, approximately from Hobart. The Bowen Bridge was built by Leighton Contractors with Federal Government funds following the collapse of the Tasman Bridge in 1975. The bridge cost 49 million to construct and was officially opened on 23 February 1984. The Bowen Bridge was built with the intention of assisting the commuters of Hobart, should something happen to the Tasman Bridge. Otago, Tasmania
Otago is a rural residential locality in the local government areas (LGA) of Brighton and Clarence in the Hobart LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south of the town of Brighton. The 2016 census recorded a population of 554 for the state suburb of Otago. It is a suburb of Hobart, located on the shores of Otago Bay. History Otago was gazetted as a locality in 1977. Previously gazetted as Gregson, after Thomas Gregson, the second Premier of Tasmania, the name was changed in 1977. The area takes its name from the iron barque ''Otago'', the only command of the author Joseph Conrad, which was dismantled at a shipbreaking establishment that operated at the bay (formerly known simply as part of Old Beach) between the 1920s and 1960s. Risdon Cove
Risdon Cove is a cove located on the east bank of the Derwent River, approximately north of Hobart, Tasmania. It was the site of the first British settlement in Van Diemen's Land, now Tasmania, the island state of Australia. The cove was named by John Hayes, who mapped the river in the ship ''Duke of Clarence'' in 1794, after his second officer William Bellamy Risdon. In 1803 Lieutenant John Bowen was sent to establish a settlement in Van Diemen's Land. On the advice of the explorer George Bass he had chosen Risdon Cove. Derwent River (Tasmania)
The River Derwent is a river located in Tasmania, Australia. It is also known by the palawa kani name timtumili minanya. The river rises in the state's Central Highlands at Lake St Clair, and descends more than over a distance of more than , flowing through Hobart, the state's capital city, before emptying into Storm Bay and flowing into the Tasman Sea. The banks of the Derwent were once covered by forests and occupied by Aboriginal Tasmanians. European settlers farmed the area and during the 20th century many dams were built on its tributaries for the generation of hydro-electricity. Agriculture, forestry, hydropower generation and fish hatcheries dominate catchment land use. The Derwent is also an important source of water for irrigation and water supply. Risdon Vale, Tasmania
Risdon Vale is an outer suburb of Hobart, capital of Tasmania, Australia on the eastern shore of the River Derwent, and adjacent to Risdon Cove, which was the site of the British colonisation of Van Diemen's Land. History Risdon Vale Post Office opened on 1 November 1960. Today It is the location of Tasmania's only maximum security prison, Risdon Prison and Risdon Women's Prison. Risdon Vale also is close to Risdon Brook Park and Dam which offers a pleasant walking track round the dam of 4 km, taking in views of Mount Wellington and its surrounds. Risdon Vale has a small population of around 3,000. Much of the area is surrounded by scrub and bush, which becomes particularly dry in the summer season and poses as a high fire risk. Geilston Bay, Tasmania
Geilston Bay (pronounced both "Jeels-ton and "Geels-ton", other pronunciations also possible) is a largely residential suburb of Hobart between Risdon Vale, Shag Bay, and Lindisfarne, in the City of Clarence located on the Eastern Shore of the Derwent River, taking its name from an inlet of that river of the same name. The inlet and locality were sometimes known by the alternative name "Limekiln Bay" on account of lime kilns which operated there between approximately the 1830s and the 1920s, the remains of which remained visible for some decades thereafter; another early name for the Bay was "James's Bay". The nationally significant Late Oligocene (or early Miocene) " Geilston Bay Local Fauna" fossil find originates from this locality. EZ Industries
EZ Industries, formerly the Electrolytic Zinc Company, was a zinc miner and refiner in Australia. History EZ Industries was established in 1916 by Amalgamated Zinc as the Electrolytic Zinc Company to operate the Risdon Zinc Works on the banks of the Derwent River in Risdon, Tasmania. It was renamed EZ Industries in February 1957. In 1967, EZ purchased the Emu Bay Railway. In February 1983, EZ opened the Elura Nine near Cobar, New South Wales. Risdon Zinc Works (trading as Nyrstar Hobart) is a major zinc refinery located in Lutana, a suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. The smelter is one of the world’s largest in terms of production volume, producing over annually of high-grade zinc, primarily as die-cast alloys and continuous galvanising-grade alloys. These products are exported for global markets and utilised in a wide range of industries and products, from building and infrastructure to transportation, business equipment, communications, electronics, and consumer goods.
