Rip Curl Pro
The Rip Curl Pro, formerly the Bells Beach Surf Classic, is a WSL (formerly ASP) World Tour surfing competition held in and around Torquay, Victoria and sponsored by surf company Rip Curl. The event is based at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia. The event winner is awarded the prestigious 'Bell' trophy. The song "Hells Bells" by AC/DC is played every morning before the first competition. History The competition has been held annually at Easter time at Bells Beach, Victoria continuously since 1962, becoming a professional competition and sponsored by Rip Curl in 1973. The contest has had various sponsors over the years, including in 1984 Australian rock band, Australian Crawl. Doug 'Claw' Warbrick
Doug Warbrick is an Australian businessman, founder of the Rip Curl brand. and notable figure in the sport of surfing. Warbrick is credited for bringing the longest running surf event in history, the Bells Beach Surf Classic, to the professional surfing circuit. He is a founding member of the ASP World Tour, surf aficionado and athlete mentor. Early life Warbrick was born on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia. Warbrick began surfing as a child in Maroochydore. Warbrick's family moved to Melbourne, Victoria and Warbrick attended Brighton Grammar School. Career In 1967 Warbrick opened the Bells Beach surf shop. In 1969, Warbrick founded Rip Curl with Brian Singer. Warbrick shaped surfboards from Singer's garage. Jordy Smith
Jordan Michael "Jordy" Smith (born 11 February 1988) is a South African professional surfer, competing on the World championship tour surfing (WCT). In 2007 Smith won surfing's World Qualifying Series, the second-tier tour which leads to qualification for the World championship tour (WCT) surfing. Jordy Smith won both the 2010 and 2011 Billabong J-Bay competitions in South Africa. He has also won 2014 and 2016 Hurley Pro at trestles California . In 2013 he won the Rio Pro in Brazil. All of these contests are part of the world championship tour. Smith grew up in Durban and started surfing at age 3. He attended a local Durban high school, Glenwood High School. The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2019 was the second event of the Men's Championship Tour in the 2019 World Surf League. It took place from 17 to 27 April in Bells Beach, Victoria, and was contested by 36 surfers.
