Rio Grande Association
The Rio Grande Association was a Class D minor baseball league that lasted for less than one season, 1915. History The league initially consisted of six teams based in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico: the Albuquerque Dukes, Douglas Miners, El Paso Mackmen, Las Cruces Farmers, Phoenix Senators and Tucson Old Pueblos. By May 24, the Miners and Farmers had disbanded and on July 6, the league disbanded. The league was founded by John McCloskey, who also founded the Texas League. Each team that appeared in the Rio Grande Association was the first professional baseball team to come out of their respective cities, often predating their successors by many years. For example, after its appearance in the Association, Phoenix and Tucson did not again have a professional team until 1928; El Paso until 1930; Albuquerque until 1932; Douglas until 1948 and Las Cruces until 2010. Douglas is a city in Cochise County, Arizona, United States that lies in the north-west to south-east running Sulpher Springs Valley. Douglas has a border crossing with Mexico at Agua Prieta and a history of mining. The population was 16,531 in the 2020 Census. Rudy Kallio
Rudolph Kallio (December 14, 1892 – April 6, 1979) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for two different teams between and . Listed at 5' 10", 160 lb., Kallio batted and threw right-handed. He was born in Portland, Oregon. Kallio entered the majors in 1918 with the Detroit Tigers, playing for them two years before joining the Boston Red Sox. In his rookie season, he showed promise as a solid starter for Detroit, going 8-14 with 70 strikeouts and a 3.62 ERA in 181⅓ innings pitched. But he developed a chronic bursitis that eventually ended his career, pitching only 22 innings the next season. He went 1-4 for the Red Sox in 1925, his last major league season. Frank Elmer Huelsman (June 5, 1874 – June 9, 1959) was an American professional baseball left fielder, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Browns (NL), Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Browns (AL), and Washington Senators. A true baseball nomad, Huelsman started his major league career late in with St. Louis Browns of the National League, hitting for a .286 average (2-for-7) in two games.
