Th' Dudes
Th' Dudes are a New Zealand rock band that was formed in the late 1970s in Auckland, New Zealand. Hits include "Walking in Light", "Right First Time", " Be Mine Tonight" and "Bliss". History 1975–1980 The band was formed by Morris, Urlich, Coleman and Dobbyn, students at Sacred Heart College in Auckland. The band name derived from the "Lone Groover" comic strip in the English music paper, ''NME''. The band's sound was heavily influenced by the British scene, especially The Beatles, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones, and later by the Punk and New Wave sounds of Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Roxy Music, The Stranglers and The Clash. Be Mine Tonight was the debut single from New Zealand band Th' Dudes. It was released in May 1979 as a Double A-side with Walking in Light and reached No. 36 on the New Zealand music charts. Be Mine Tonight won Single of the Year at the 1979 New Zealand Music Awards. APRA Top 100 New Zealand Songs Of All Time
The APRA Top 100 New Zealand Songs of All Time is a selection of New Zealand songs as voted in 2001 by members of the Australasian Performing Right Association. The top 30 of this selection was used to create the ''Nature's Best'' CD and the rest of the list for follow up compilations. A similar list was made in Australia of the top 30 Australian songs. Selection The list was created to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) in New Zealand in 2001. 900 candidate songs were chosen for APRA members to vote on. The top 30 songs were released on the ''Nature's Best'' CD. Commentary Some artists feature prominently in the list. Ian Morris (musician)
Ian Gordon Morris (22 January 1957 – 7 October 2010) was a musician, record producer, recording engineer and songwriter from New Zealand. Musical career Ian Morris and his brother Richard (who would also go on to become a successful singer, songwriter and sound engineer in New Zealand under the name ''Rikki Morris'') were born in England but emigrated with their family to New Zealand in 1966. They attended Sacred Heart College, Auckland. Ian was a founding member of iconic New Zealand band Th' Dudes, formed at Sacred Heart in 1975. He had chart hits as a solo artist under the name ''Tex Pistol'' (a name he took on because "Ian Morris idn'tsound poppy enough"), and in collaboration with his brother Rikki as ''Tex Pistol and Rikki Morris''. Sir David Joseph Dobbyn (born 3 January 1957) is a New Zealand musician, singer–songwriter and record producer. In his early career he was a member of the rock group Th' Dudes and was the main creative force in pop band DD Smash. Since then he has released the majority of his recordings as a solo performer. Early life Dave Dobbyn was born on 3 January 1957 in the working class area of Glen Innes, Auckland, the third of five children to tour-bus driver Terry Dobbyn and Molly. He was influenced by music from a young age, ranging from the Irish songs his father listened to, to the music of the church across the road, to the various radio stations he was able to pick up on the family radiogram. While his family had a piano at home, he was the only member to not receive piano lessons, something he was grateful for in retrospect as it meant he was able to come to it without memories of strict lessons. Stebbing Studios
Stebbing Studios is a recording studio in Auckland, New Zealand. Artists who have had their work recorded over the years, include: Ray Columbus & The Invaders, Bill & Boyd, Gary Havoc & The Hurricanes, The Human Instinct, and Waves. Background The studio was founded by Eldred Stebbing, who also founded Zodiac Records. He originally set up a recording studio in the basement of the family home in the Auckland suburb of Herne Bay. He built the Stebbing Recording Centre in 1970, which is located in Jervois Rd, where it is still in operation today. The studio is well known and is considered iconic. Eldred Stebbing died in 2009, aged 88. 1970s In 1970, they were the first to have eight track recording facilities. During 1974 - 1975, John Hanlon recorded at the studio.
