Right2Water
Right2Water is a campaign to commit the European Union and Member state of the European Union, member states to implement the human right to water and sanitation. It has three stated goals: # Guaranteed water and sanitation for all in Europe. # No liberalisation of water services. # Universal (Global) access to water and sanitation. The European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) represented more than 120 NGO and was supported by the German and Austrian trade unions. The backbone of the ECI was The European Federation of Public Service Unions, the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) whose President Anne-Marie Perret was also the president of the citizens Committee. On 21 March 2013, it became the first ECI to collect more than a million signatures and they reached the minimum quota of signatures in seven countries on 7 May 2013. European Citizens' Initiative
The European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) is a European Union (EU) mechanism aimed at increasing direct democracy by enabling "EU citizens to participate directly in the development of EU policies", introduced with the Treaty of Lisbon in 2007. The initiative enables one million citizens of the European Union, who are nationals of at least seven member states, to call directly on the European Commission to propose a legal act (notably a Directive or Regulation) in an area where the member states have conferred powers onto the EU level. This right to request the commission to initiate a legislative proposal puts citizens on the same footing as the European Parliament and the European Council, who enjoy this right according to Articles 225 and 241 TFEU, respectively. The European Federation Of Public Service Unions
The European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) was founded in 1978 and represents eight million public service workers from over 260 trade union organisations. It is affiliated to the European Trade Union Confederation and is the recognised regional organisation of Public Services International. It represents the workers in the energy, water and waste sectors, health and social services and local, regional and central government in all European countries. Public Services and Social Dialogue EPSU supports public investment and well-funded publicly owned services. EPSU opposes budget cuts, liberalisation, austerity, low pay and poor working conditions. Eau de Paris (Paris Water) is the publicly owned company responsible for the public water supply and waste water collection for the city of Paris. History In 1985, Jacques Chirac, then Mayor of Paris decided to transfer the municipal water service into the hands of three private entities with a direct contract and without a public procurement procedure. The property of water wasn't formally transferred and was kept as a public common good.
