Rick Cunningham (ice Hockey)
Richard Glen Cunningham (born March 3, 1951) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played 323 games in the World Hockey Association (WHA). Early life Cunningham was born in Toronto. As a youth, he played in the 1963 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Toronto Shopsy's minor ice hockey team. Career During his career, Cunningham played for the Ottawa Nationals, Toronto Toros, and Birmingham Bulls (WHA), Birmingham Bulls in the WHA. In 1977, he moved to Austria and subsequently played for the Austria men's national ice hockey team. Defence or defense (in American English) in ice hockey is a player position that is primarily responsible for preventing the opposing team from Goal (ice hockey), scoring. They are often referred to as defencemen, D, D-men or blueliners (the latter a reference to the blue line in ice hockey which represents the boundary of the offensive zone; defencemen generally position themselves along the line to keep the puck in the zone). They were once called cover-point. In regular play, two defencemen complement three Forward (ice hockey), forwards and a goaltender on the ice.
