Richmond County Courthouse (Virginia)
Richmond County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Warsaw, Richmond County, Virginia. It was built between 1748 and 1750, and is a one-story Colonial era brick building with a hipped roof. It measures approximately 52 feet by 41 feet. During a remodeling in 1877, the original arcade was bricked up and incorporated into the main building. Also on the property is a contemporary clerk's office. Warsaw, Virginia
Warsaw is an incorporated Town in and the County Seat of Richmond County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,637 at the 2020 census and is estimated to be 2,281 as of 2022. History The original name of the Town was Richmond Courthouse. In 1831 the Town's name was changed to Warsaw, after the news of the bloody Battle of Warsaw reached local residents. A number of other small towns in the United States changed their names to Warsaw at this time (Warsaw, Kentucky for instance), all as a result of sympathy in the United States for the November Uprising in Poland. Because Richmond Courthouse was still unincorporated in 1830, it is unclear who was responsible for the change of name to Warsaw. Col. Landon Carter, I (August 18, 1710 – December 22, 1778) was an American planter and burgess for Richmond County, Virginia. Although one of the most popular patriotic writers and pamphleters of pre-Revolutionary and Revolutionary-era Virginia, he may today be perhaps best known for his journal, which described colonial life leading up the American War of Independence, ''The Diary of Colonel Landon Carter''.
