Richmond (automobile)
Two Brass era automobiles named Richmond were produced in Richmond, Indiana. A Steam car was made by the Richmond Automobile Company in 1902 and 1903. The Wayne Works produced the Richmond automobile from 1904 to 1917. Richmond Automobile Company The Richmond steam car engine was claimed to be simple and the most compact steam vehicle engine on the market. The two-cylinder engine had a 2.5" bore and 3.5" stroke and weighed just 46 pounds. This engine produced its maximum 6 horsepower at 960 rpm. The engine was believed to have been designed by Isham Sedgwick and the steam car was developed by R. L. Sackett. Just the engine was manufactured in 1901, with production of the entire car commencing the following year. The Richmond was a chain-driven dos-a-dos four-seater. The Brass Era is an American term for the early period of automotive manufacturing, named for the prominent brass fittings used during this time for such things as lights and radiators. It is generally considered to encompass 1896 through 1915, a time when these vehicles were often referred to as horseless carriages. Elsewhere in the world, this period would be considered by antique car enthusiasts to consist of the veteran (pre-1904), and Edwardian eras, although these terms are really not meaningful outside the former British Empire. Wayne County is a county located in east central Indiana, United States, on the border with Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 68,917. The county seat is Richmond. Herff–Brooks Corporation
Herff–Brooks Corporation was a brass era automobile manufacturer based in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1914 to 1916. History Herff-Brooks formed in 1913 to take on the sales of the Marathon Motor Works of Nashville, Tennessee. By 1915 Herff-Brooks purchased the now defunct Marathon machinery, and along with some personnel set up a new factory at the Wayne Works in Richmond, Indiana. Herff-Brooks were identical to the 1914 Marathons with minor improvements. A 40  hp four-cylinder car, at $1,100, and a 50 hp six-cylinder car, at $1,375 were offered. For 1915 a 25 hp car, selling at $765, was added. H. H. Brooks, former Sales Manager for Marathon was General Manager.
