Richard Yates (actor)
Richard Yates (c. 1706–1796) was an English comic actor, who worked at the Haymarket Theatre and Drury Lane among others, appearing in David Garrick's ''King Lear''. He also worked in theatre management, and set up the New Theatre in Birmingham in 1773. Both his first wife, Elizabeth Mary (maiden name unknown, died in 1753) and Mary Anne Graham (1728–1787 - married in 1756) were actresses. Life Born about 1706, he played in Henry Fielding's ''Pasquin'' at the Haymarket when it was first performed. In 1737–9, at Covent Garden, he was seen in a number of parts. On 4 September 1739 he appeared at Drury Lane as Jeremy in ''Love for Love'', and played other comic parts. At Goodman's Fields he appeared on 18 October 1740 as Antonio in '' Venice Preserved'', playing further parts during the season. Richard Yates (antiquary)
Richard Yates (1769–1834) was an English cleric and antiquary. Life Born in July 1769 at Bury St. Edmunds, he was the son of Richard Yates (1741–1803). He was educated at Bury grammar school, but left it at the age of 15 to take a post as usher in a school at Linton, Cambridgeshire. In 1789 he was a teacher at Chelmsford grammar school, and in 1792 at a school in Hammersmith. In September 1796 he was ordained deacon, and preached his first sermon as curate of Chelsea Hospital on 2 October 1796. In January 1797 he was ordained priest, and in March 1798 he was appointed one of the chaplains of the hospital, with which he remained connected until his death. While at Chelsea Hospital he acquired a reputation as a popular preacher. In 1793 Yates had matriculated at Jesus College, Cambridge. In May 1804 he was appointed to the rectory of Ashen, Essex. Richard Yates (politician, Born 1815)
Richard Yates (January 18, 1815 – November 27, 1873) was the Governor of Illinois during the American Civil War and has been considered one of the most effective war governors. He took energetic measures to secure Cairo and St. Louis against rebel attack. Nicknamed the "Soldiers' Friend", he helped organize the Illinois contingent of Union soldiers, including commissioning Ulysses S. Grant as a colonel for an Illinois regiment. He supported the Emancipation Proclamation. He also represented Illinois in the United States House of Representatives (1851–1855) and in the U.S. Senate (1865–1871). As a Senator, he voted and spoke in favor of removing President Andrew Johnson from office. He was a Whig and then a Republican. Early life Yates was born in a log cabin in Warsaw, Kentucky. Dick Yates
Richard Yates (6 June 1921 – 1976) was a Welsh footballer who spent six years immediately after World War II playing centre-forward in the Football League for Chester, Wrexham, Carlisle United, and New Brighton. Career Yates played as a guest for Wrexham, Reading, Charlton Athletic and Port Vale during World War II. After the war he signed with Frank Brown's Chester, and with 36 goals in the 1946–47 season he set a club record that was never equalled. Despite his efforts, the "Seals" could only finish third in the Third Division North and were not promoted. He left Sealand Road in the 1947–48 season and scored 18 goals in 31 league games for Wrexham, who also finished third in the Third Division North. He scored hat-tricks against Halifax Town in the league and against Penrhyn Quarry in the Welsh Cup. He departed the Racecourse Ground, and switched to league rivals Carlisle United. Richard Yates (February 3, 1926 – November 7, 1992) was an American fiction writer identified with the mid-century "Age of Anxiety". His first novel, '' Revolutionary Road'', was a finalist for the 1962 National Book Award, while his first short story collection, '' Eleven Kinds of Loneliness'', brought comparisons to James Joyce. Critical acclaim for his writing, however, was not reflected in commercial success during his lifetime. Interest in Yates has revived somewhat since his death, partly because of an influential 1999 essay by Stewart O'Nan in the ''Boston Review'', a 2003 biography by Blake Bailey and the 2008 Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning film '' Revolutionary Road'' starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Richard Yates (born 26 January 1986) is an English track and field athlete who specialised in the 400 metres hurdles. His most prominent performance was a 5th-place finish and a 4 × 400 metres relay bronze medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. His personal best for the 400m hurdles is 49.06 seconds. Richard started running in his early childhood at the age of four and continued to pursue athletics alongside his education, first competing at an international level by the time he was 22. Despite becoming the British Athletics Championships, British Champion at 400m hurdles in 2008 he was not selected to represent Great Britain in the Beijing Olympics, to some controversy. He later reclaimed his title as English Champion again in 2013 and also in 2016.
