Richard Voris (Wheelchair Rugby)
Richard Voris (born 14 May 1991) is an Australian wheelchair rugby player. He represented the Steelers at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, his first Games. Personal Richard Voris was born 14 May 1991. As a 19-year-old apprentice electrician, one of friends jumped on Voris in a backyard swimming pool and crushed his neck. This left Voris as an incomplete C6-7 quadriplegic. In 2012, he contracted an autoimmune disease called myasthenia gravis. In 2018, his myasthenia gravis was triggered and led to him undergoing plasmapheresis every two weeks and having steroid injections to help offset fatigue. He grew up in Winmalee, New South Wales. In 2021, he lives in Sydney, New South Wales. Wheelchair rugby Voris is classified as 1.5 wheelchair rugby player. He took up wheelchair rugby two years after his accident. Wheelchair Rugby Classification
Wheelchair rugby classification is the seven class system that assigns players a point value based on functional mobility to insure parity in athletic ability on the court at any given time. Classification is handled by the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation. Definition In wheelchair rugby, players are assessed into seven classes: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 points. The lower level points indicate less functional ability and the higher points indicate greater functional ability. Men and women both play the sport, and they play on the same team. There are no separate events for men and women. Only four players are on the court at any given time. The total points on the floor for a team cannot exceed 8, but this maximum is increased by 0.5 points for every female on the court. Wheelchair Rugby
Wheelchair rugby (originally murderball, and known as quad rugby in the United States) is a team sport for athletes with a disability. It is practised in over twenty-five countries around the world and is a summer Paralympic sport. The US name is based on the requirement that all wheelchair rugby players need to have disabilities that include at least some loss of function in at least three limbs. Although most have spinal cord injuries, players may also qualify through multiple amputations, neurological disorders or other medical conditions. Players are assigned a functional level in points, and each team is limited to fielding a team with a total of eight points. Wheelchair rugby is played indoors on a hardwood court, and physical contact between wheelchairs is an integral part of the game. Myasthenia Gravis
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a long-term neuromuscular junction disease that leads to varying degrees of skeletal muscle weakness. The most commonly affected muscles are those of the eyes, face, and swallowing. It can result in double vision, drooping eyelids, trouble talking, and trouble walking. Onset can be sudden. Those affected often have a large thymus or develop a thymoma. Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease of the neuro-muscular junction which results from antibodies that block or destroy nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChR) at the junction between the nerve and muscle. This prevents nerve impulses from triggering muscle contractions. Most cases are due to immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) and IgG3 antibodies that attack AChR in the postsynaptic membrane, causing complement-mediated damage and muscle weakness. Wheelchair Rugby At The 2020 Summer Paralympics
The Wheelchair rugby tournament at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan was the seventh edition of Wheelchair rugby as a Paralympic sport since its debut as a demonstration sport at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta. The competition was hosted at the Yoyogi National Stadium and was held from 25 to 29 August 2021. Eight teams competed in the competition which included the debutant of Denmark at the Paralympics. The eight teams were separated into two groups of four with the top two teams from each group qualifying through to the semi-finals while the bottom two played off in the fifth and seventh place match respectively. 2022 IWRF World Championship
The 2022 Wheelchair Rugby World Championship was the 8th international championship for wheelchair rugby. It was held at the DGI-Huset recreational centre in Vejle, Denmark from 10–16 October 2022 and contested by the world's top twelve national teams. The tournament was won by Australia, defeating United States in the final by 58–55 to claim their second title. Tournament Twelve teams contested the 2022 Wheelchair Rugby World Championship.
