Earl Of Tyrone
The Earl of Tyrone is a title created three times in the Peerage of Ireland. It was first created as part of the Tudor attempt to establish a uniform social structure in Ireland by converting the Gaelic kings and chiefs into hereditary nobles of the Kingdom of Ireland. Under brehon law, clans were effectively independent, and chose their chiefs from the members of a bloodline – normally, but not always, a close relative of the previous chief; the clan as a whole generally had a voice in the chief's decisions. Also, acknowledged sons of a clan member were members of the bloodline, even when not begotten in lawful marriage. The holder of a title, on the other hand, was subject to the Crown, but held his lands by hereditary right, which the Crown would help to enforce; the rest of the clan were usually now his tenants. Richard Power, 1st Earl Of Tyrone
Richard Power, 1st Earl of Tyrone (1630–1690) was an Irish Jacobite nobleman. Early life Power was the eldest son of John Power, 5th Baron Power, of Curraghmore, County Waterford, who died in 1661, by his wife Ruth Pyphoe. About the time of his birth, his father became insane; his mother died when he was about twelve years old, and his grandmother Mrs. Pyphoe obtained protection for her daughter's children on the ground of their father's lunacy, and lack of involvement in the Irish Rebellion of 1641. When Oliver Cromwell came to Ireland he issued an order on 20 September 1649 to the effect that Lord Power and his family were under his protection. The Powers were pardoned in the Cromwellian Act of Settlement, but they were impoverished by the war, and in the spring of 1654 they received a weekly grant. Waterford was a parliamentary constituency in Ireland, represented in the British House of Commons. Boundaries and boundary changes This constituency once comprised the whole of County Waterford, except for the parliamentary boroughs of Dungarvan (1801–1885) and Waterford City (1801–1885 and 1918–1922). It returned two Members of Parliament 1801–1885 and one 1918–1922. It was an original constituency represented in Parliament when the Union of Great Britain and Ireland took effect on 1 January 1801. Between 1885 and 1918 the area had been divided between the constituencies of East Waterford and West Waterford. From 1922 it was no longer represented in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Richard Power (Parnellite MP)
Richard Power (1851 – 29 November 1891) was an Irish nationalist politician and MP in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and as member of the Home Rule League and the Irish Parliamentary Party represented Waterford City from 6 February 1874 until his death at the early age of 40, in 1891. He was first elected in the 1874 United Kingdom general election as a candidate of the Home Rule League, standing with Major Purcell O'Gorman, who was the other member elected. He was re-elected in 1880, then stood successfully for the Irish Parliamentary Party in the elections of 1885 and 1886. He served as Mayor of Waterford in 1886 and 1887. Dick Power
Richard John Power (13 December 1903 – unknown) was a Welsh professional heavyweight boxer. Born in Crumlin in Monmouthshire, Power became the Welsh heavyweight champion in 1926. Boxing career Although there is little record of Power's amateur career, he is recorded on the 4 July 1925 as fighting professionally against Trevor Llewellyn at Lydney near the Wales/England border. Power took the fight on a points decision, and followed this with two wins in August, both in his home-town, over Eddie Wolf and Bill Bates. On 12 September, he faced Belgian Pierre Charles at The Ring in Blackfriars. Charles was the more experienced fighter, and would soon become Belgian and European heavyweight champion, but Power took the fight after Charles was forced to retire in the first round. Richie Power Snr
Richie Power (born 8 April 1957 in Carrickshock, County Kilkenny, Ireland) is an Irish former hurler who played for his local club Carrickshock and at senior level for the Kilkenny county team from 1982 until 1991. Playing career Club Power played his club hurling with his local Carrickshock club; however, he never won a senior county title. Inter-county Power first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Kilkenny minor hurling team. He won a Leinster title in this grade in 1975 before later winning an All-Ireland medal following a victory over Cork. Power later joined the county under-21 team and won both Leinster and All-Ireland honours in 1977. Power later joined the Kilkenny senior team and won a National Hurling League medal in 1982.
