Norris Locomotive Works
The Norris Locomotive Works was a steam locomotive manufacturing company based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that produced nearly one thousand railroad engines between 1832 and 1866. It was the dominant American locomotive producer during most of that period, as well as the first major exporter of American locomotives, selling its popular 4-2-0 engines to railways in Europe and building the first locomotive used in South America. History Origin The company was started in 1832 as the American Steam Carriage Company by William Norris (1802-1867) and Major Stephen H. Long (1784-1864), a military topographical engineer and explorer. The two men had experimented with steam engine building for years and, as early as 1829, designed a locomotive to burn anthracite coal. ''Abie's Irish Rose'' is a 1946 American comedy film directed by A. Edward Sutherland based Abie's Irish Rose, on a play by Anne Nichols. The film stars Michael Chekhov, Joanne Dru, Richard Norris, J. M. Kerrigan, George E. Stone, Vera Gordon, and Emory Parnell. The film was released on December 27, 1946, by United Artists. It was a remake of Abie's Irish Rose (1928 film), the 1928 film that was based on the 1922 play Abie's Irish Rose by Anne Nichols. The film drew criticism for stereotyping and additional cuts were made after complaints. Plot Stationed in London, the Jewish American soldier Abie Levy falls in love with a young Irish Catholic lady, Rosemary Murphy, and they get married. Richard Owen Alfred Norris (10 December 1931 – 25 August 2012) was a British field hockey player who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics The 1952 Summer Olympics ( fi, Kesäolympialaiset 1952; sv, Olympiska sommarspelen 1952), officially known as the Games of the XV Olympiad ( fi, XV olympiadin kisat; sv, Den XV olympiadens spel) and commonly known as Helsinki 1952 ( sv, Helsin ... in Helsinki, winning a bronze medal. He was the youngest member of the British field hockey team, which won the bronze medal. He played all three matches as forward. Richard Norris (musician)
Richard Norris was born 23 June 1965 and is a London-based record producer, songwriter, sound engineer, musician, DJ and author. He is best known as a member of electronic dance band The Grid. Richard has also worked as a producer and engineer since the 80s with artists such as: Bryan Ferry, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Marc Almond, Joe Strummer and the Pet Shop Boys. Norris began making music as a teenage member of St. Albans punk band Innocent Vicars. Vicars recorded two singles in 1980: "Antimatter" and "Funky Town" for the independent No Brain Records. Norris started working in the music industry as the label manager for the British psychedelic record label Bam Caruso before becoming a writer for NME in 1987. Bands The Grid Norris and David Ball collaborated when they formed the electronic dance group The Grid in 1988. The Grid signed to Warner Bros Records/East West Records the same year. Professor Richard Hill Norris FRSE FRSGS (1830-1916) was a British physiologist, spiritualist and photographer. From the 1880s he began microscopic photography of blood corpuscles and was a pioneer of microphotography. In 1856 he invented the dry collodion photographic plate. Life Norris studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, developing an early interest in microphotography; mainly taking pictures of frogs' blood. In 1856 he invented the first dry collodion photographic plate, during 1858 founding the Patent Dry Collodion Plate Company in Birmingham - one of the first commercial producers of photographic materials in the world. From 1862 to 1891 he was Professor of Physiology at Queens College in Birmingham. In 1878 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, their proposers being Sir Thomas Richard Fraser, John Gray McKendrick, Alexander Dickson and Alexander Buchan.
