Richard Murphy (screenwriter)
Richard Murphy (May 8, 1912 – May 19, 1993) was an American screenwriter, film director and producer. His screenplays for '' Boomerang'' (1947) and '' The Desert Rats'' (1953) were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay, respectively. Biography Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Murphy worked for '' Literary Digest'' in the 1930s before leaving in 1937 to work in the short film department at MGM. Murphy's first screenwriting credit was for providing the story for ''Back in the Saddle'', a 1941 Gene Autry western. While in the Army Air Forces during World War II, Murphy reached the rank of captain seeing action in the Pacific theater countries of New Guinea and the Philippines. Murphy returned to the States and started working for 20th Century Fox. In 1947 he wrote the award-winning film '' Boomerang''. Richard Kerr Murphy (6 August 1927 – 30 January 2018) was an Anglo-Irish poet. Biography Early years Murphy was born to an Anglo-Irish family at Milford House, near the Mayo-Galway border, in 1927. He spent much of his early childhood in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) where his father William Lindsay Murphy served in the Colonial Service and was active as mayor of Colombo, later becoming Governor General of the Bahamas (in succession to the Duke of Windsor). Murphy received his education at the King's School, Canterbury and Wellington College. He won a scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford at the age of 17, where he studied English under C.S. Lewis. He was later educated at the Sorbonne, and ran a school in Crete between 1953 and 1954. In his ''Archaeology of Love'' (1955), Murphy reflects on his experiences in England and Continental Europe. Richard M. Murphy (born December 16, 1942) is a former American politician who served as the 33rd mayor of San Diego, California from 2000 to 2005. Early life Murphy was born 1942 in Oak Park, Illinois. He was captain of the varsity basketball team and Senior Class President of Proviso West High School in its first graduating class in 1961. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Illinois with a degree in Economics and served as president of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He received his Master of Business Administration from Harvard University and his law degree from Stanford University. Murphy served as an officer in the U.S. Army, in The Pentagon and as a military aide to the Nixon administration. Richard Lee Murphy (October 25, 1931 – December 12, 2020) was an American professional baseball player who played for three seasons (1954; 1957–1958) and had a six-game trial with the Cincinnati Redlegs of Major League Baseball. He threw and batted left-handed, stood tall and weighed . Murphy attended Ohio University, where he was an All-American as an outfielder. He signed with his hometown Redlegs on June 12, 1954, and made his Major League debut the following day against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Crosley Field. In his only MLB plate appearance, he pinch hit for Cincinnati relief pitcher Jackie Collum against Brooklyn lefthander Johnny Podres and struck out.
