Richard M. Dougherty
Richard M. Dougherty (born January 17, 1935) is an American librarian and educator who was the director of libraries at both the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Michigan. He served as the president of the American Library Association from 1990 to 1991, focusing on bringing attention to information access issues and supporting children's literacy. Education and career Dougherty received his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in 1959. He went on to earn his Master of Library Science in 1961 and his Ph.D. degree in 1963, both from Rutgers University. He held a number of administrative positions in academic libraries, beginning at the University of Colorado as the associate director of libraries from 1966 to 1970. From 1972 to 1978 Dougherty held the position of University Librarian at the University of California, Berkeley. A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD, Ph.D., or DPhil; Latin: or ') is the most common Academic degree, degree at the highest academic level awarded following a course of study.
