Richard M. Brett
Richard M. Brett (September 3, 1903 – September 7, 1989) was an American conservationist and author. Biography Early life Brett was born in Darien, Connecticut and spent most of his life in Woodstock, Vermont, and Fairfield, Connecticut. Brett was a graduate of the Taft School, Williams College, and the Yale School of Forestry. Career Brett served as treasurer (appointed 1926) and general manager of Macmillan Publishing. After serving in World War II, Brett was the business manager of the New York Public Library from 1947 until 1953. Conservationist After retirement in 1953, Brett moved to Vermont, where he set up a tree farm with habitats for wildlife at Hawk's Hill in East Barnard. He served as a trustee of the Vermont Natural Resources Council. Brett later donated his Hawk's Hill tree farm to the New England Forestry Foundation. Darien, Connecticut
Darien ( ) is a coastal town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. With a population of 21,499 and a land area of just under 13 square miles, it is the smallest town on Connecticut's Gold Coast. It has the youngest population of any non-college town in Connecticut, a high rate of marriage, and high number of average children per household. Darien is also one of the wealthiest communities in the U.S. Situated on Long Island Sound between the cities of Stamford and Norwalk, the town has relatively few office buildings. George Platt Brett Jr. (December 9, 1893 – February 11, 1984) served at Chairman of the American division of Macmillan Publishing and secured publishing rights to ''Gone with the Wind (novel), Gone With the Wind''. Biography Career George Brett started with Macmillan in 1913 as a Peddler, traveling salesman and took over as President of Macmillan in 1931. Brett took over as chairman in 1936 after the death of his father, George Platt Brett Sr. Brett is best known for having "scored one of publishing's all-time triumphs by gaining the rights to 'Gone with the Wind (novel), Gone With the Wind.' The success of ''Gone with the Wind'' from 1935-1936 lead to bonuses of 18% to all employees at Macmillan. George Edward Brett
George Edward Brett (1829–1890) opened the first American office of Macmillan Publishing called Macmillan & Co. of New York. Career Brett was assigned by Alexander Macmillan (publisher) to create the New York Office in August 1869. Brett was aided in the creation of the New York office, by American firm Messrs Pott & Amery. Frederick Macmillan commenting on Brett resignation letter said "We have all been profoundly touched by your letter . . . it is a great achievement for a man to go through this life with a spotless reputation & to be successful in what he sets himself to do. You will have succeeded in both these aims, and whatever fortune may have in store for the New York Agency, we shall not forget who it was that brought it through troublous times." United States Army Air Corps
The United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) was the aerial warfare service component of the United States Army between 1926 and 1941. After World War I, as early aviation became an increasingly important part of modern warfare, a philosophical rift developed between more traditional ground-based army personnel and those who felt that aircraft were being underutilized and that air operations were being stifled for political reasons unrelated to their effectiveness. The USAAC was renamed from the earlier United States Army Air Service on 2 July 1926, and was part of the larger United States Army. The Air Corps became the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) on 20 June 1941, giving it greater autonomy from the Army's middle-level command structure.
