Richard Lewknor (1542–1616)
Sir Richard Lewknor (bapt. 14 March 1541 – 6 April 1616) of Downeley, West Dean, Sussex, was an English politician. He was the son of Edmund Lewknor of Tangmere, Sussex and the brother of Thomas Lewknor, MP. He was educated at the Middle Temple and there called to the bar. Career He was made a bencher in 1581 and sergeant-at-law in 1594. He was appointed Recorder of Chichester from 1588 to 1590 and a judge on the Chester circuit in 1589, where he was promoted to be Chief Justice of Chester in 1603, a position he held until his death. As a judge he was impartial although a staunch Catholic, even sentencing four Catholic priests to death. He also held a number of public commissions during his career and was knighted in 1600. He was elected Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Chichester in 1572, 1584, 1586, 1589, 1593 and 1597. In Parliament he sat on a number of committees. West Dean, West Sussex
West Dean is a village, Anglican parish and civil parish in the District of Chichester in West Sussex, England north of Chichester on the A286 road just west of Singleton. The parishes include the hamlets of Binderton and Chilgrove. The civil parish has a land area of . The 2001 Census recorded 425 people living in 177 households, of whom 248 were economically active. The village is on the Monarch's Way long-distance footpath. West Dean is in the Lavant Valley in the South Downs and has a Church of England parish church and one public house, ''The Selsey Arms''. The church and most of the houses are built of flint, in most cases with brick quoins and window dressings. Richard Lewknor
Richard Lewknor (c. 1589 – 27 May 1635) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1621 and 1629. Lewknor was the son of Richard Lewknor, of West Dean, Sussex, and Eleanor, daughter of Sir Christopher Brome of Holton, Oxfordshire. He was the elder brother of Christopher Lewknor, also an MP. He came into possession of the family manor of West Dean on the death of his grandfather Sir Richard Lewknor in 1616. In 1621, Lewknor was elected Member of Parliament for Midhurst. He was re-elected in 1624 1625 and 1626. The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system.
