Richard John Loveday
Richard John Loveday (1818–1883) was a government surveyor during the early settlement of South Australia. Loveday was born near London on 19 December 1818. He was a lance corporal in the Royal Sappers and Miners, serving in Ireland and subsequently South Australia having arrived on the Royal George in 1847. Loveday, his wife and three children emigrated to South Australia aboard ''Royal George'', arriving in June 1847. Their fourth, Mary, was born in Adelaide in 1850. Bridget died two years later, and Loveday married again, in the same year, and had another ten children. He found employment with the civil service as a surveyor under Surveyor-General Sir Arthur Henry Freeling, and is known for mapping part of Lake Alexandrina. His sons Richard, jun. and Thomas were in 1868 members of George Goyder's survey party that defined the settlement that became Darwin, Northern Territory Loveday died in Adelaide on 15 December 1883. Loveday Bay (South Australia)
Loveday Bay is an inlet in the Australian state of South Australia located at the south-eastern end of Lake Alexandrina on the west coast of the Narrung Peninsula. It is located within the locality of Narrung. The bay has a subsidiary inlet on its south coast which is known as Salt Lagoon which includes the protected area, the Salt Lagoon Islands Conservation Park. Loveday, South Australia
Loveday is a town and locality in the Riverland region of South Australia, located south of Barmera and near the Murray River. Administratively it is part of the Berri Barmera Council LGA. At the 2006 census, Loveday had a population of 1,071. History Located east of the Moorook Game Reserve, Loveday was known for its Internment Camp during World War II. The camp was established in 1941 and was one of the largest in Australia, covering approximately 180 hectares. Italian anti-fascist activist Francesco Fantin was killed there by a fellow internee. The camp was closed in December 1946. The Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum has a substantial display devoted to the Loveday internment camp, maintained by the National Trust (check theiwebsitefor open days). Goolwa, South Australia
Goolwa is a historic river port on the Murray River near the Murray Mouth in South Australia, and joined by a bridge to Hindmarsh Island. The name "Goolwa" means "elbow" in Ngarrindjeri, the local Aboriginal language, and the area was known as "The Elbow" to the early settlers. Goolwa is approximately 85 km south of Adelaide, and is the seat of the Alexandrina Council. It is in the state electoral district of Hammond and the federal Division of Mayo.
