Richard Hughes (British Writer)
Richard Arthur Warren Hughes (19 April 1900 – 28 April 1976) was a British writer of poems, short stories, novels and plays. He was born in Weybridge, Surrey. His father was Arthur Hughes, a civil servant, and his mother Louisa Grace Warren who had been brought up in the West Indies in Jamaica. He was educated first at Charterhouse School and graduated from Oriel College, Oxford, Oriel College, Oxford in 1922. A Charterhouse schoolmaster had sent Hughes's first published work to the magazine ''The Spectator (1828), The Spectator'' in 1917. The article, written as a school essay, was an unfavourable criticism of ''The Loom of Youth'', by Alec Waugh, a recently published novel which caused a furore for its account of homosexual passions between British schoolboys in a Public School (UK), public school. Richard Hughes (jockey)
Richard Hughes (born 11 January 1973) is a retired Irish jockey and current racehorse trainer who is based at Lambourn in Berkshire, England. Born in Dublin, he is the son of successful National Hunt trainer, Dessie Hughes. Hughes became British flat racing Champion Jockey in 2012 and retained that title in 2013, when he rode more than 200 winners in the season, and again in 2014. Riding career Hughes started pony racing aged seven, having his first win aboard Chestnut Lady in a six furlong race at Wexford. His first ride in the senior ranks was in a six furlong maiden at Naas on 19 March 1988, on a debutant called Scath Na Greine. He finished tenth. Since the end of 2013, Hughes' main provider of rides has been trainer Richard Hannon Jr., who is also his brother in law. Richard Cyril Hughes (1932 – 2022 was a Welsh educator, writer and historian. Hughes was born in Tara Street, Caergybi, Isle of Anglesey. A graduate and Masters from University of Wales Aberystwyth, he started his teaching career of Welsh at Grove Park School in Wrexham and Rhiwabon before moving to Bangor Normal College to lecture in education. He became an early pioneer for the teaching of subjects through the medium of Welsh and worked as a Senior Education officer for Gwynedd Education Authority before taking early retirement 1998. He married Elizabeth Ann (Nan Evans) from Cynwil Elfed, Carmarthen in 1959. Richard Bannister Hughes Mills (1810-1875), known as Richard Bannister Hughes and also Ricardo Hughes, was a British expatriate businessman in Uruguay. Notable as a rancher and entrepreneur, Hughes helped to modernize Uruguayan agriculture. Admiral Sir Richard Hughes, 2nd Baronet ( – 5 January 1812) was a British naval commander. Naval career Hughes was probably born in London, England, the son of Captain Sir Richard Hughes. He entered the Portsmouth Naval Academy in 1739. He served on a number of ships in various locations during his naval career, including from 1763 to 1766. It is known that Hughes was in Canada in 1778, as he was appointed resident commissioner of the Halifax dockyard. This appointment was short, as by August of the same year he became lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia, succeeding Mariot Arbuthnot in that position. During his tenure, the main concern was the protection of the Province. In 1779, he succeeded his father as baronet. He became acting commander-in-chief The Downs in 1781. Captain Sir Richard Hughes, 1st Baronet (1708–23 September 1779) was a Royal Navy officer of the eighteenth century who served as Resident Commissioner of Portsmouth Dockyard. Hughes joined the navy in 1721 and served on a variety of ships, some commanded by his father Captain Richard Hughes, mostly in the Mediterranean Sea and Baltic Sea, and was also a some-time follower of Admiral Sir John Norris. He was promoted to commander in 1739 and given command of HMS ''Anne Galley'', and was promoted to post-captain in the following year. Having served mostly in command of ships in the Mediterranean Fleet, Hughes was given command of the guardship HMS ''Fougueux'' in 1753, from where he was appointed Resident Commissioner of Portsmouth in 1754. He served there until 1773, in which year he was created a baronet and then retired. He died at Southampton, aged 71. Richard Daniel Hughes (born 25 June 1979) is a Scottish former professional footballer, who played as a defensive midfielder. He started his professional career as a junior in Italy for Atalanta before moving to Arsenal and AFC Bournemouth. He most prominently previously featured for Portsmouth from 2002 until 2011, and had a brief loan spell with Grimsby Town in 2003. After a year out of the game, Hughes signed again for Bournemouth. He finally retired from playing in May 2014, aged 34. He was capped five times by Scotland. Rick Hughes (born August 22, 1973) is an American former professional basketball player. He was the LNB Pro A Best Scorer, French League Best Scorer, in 2004 and 2011. College career Hughes graduated from Walnut Hills High School, in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1991, and afterwards, he attended Thomas More College (Kentucky), Thomas More College. He was a four-year standout while at TMC, during the 1992–1996 seasons. He is the only player in the now defunct conference (AMC), to have been the Rookie of the Year, a four-time Player of the Year, a four-time Conference First Team Selection, a three-time Tournament MVP, a four-time Tournament First Team selection, and a four-time scoring leader.
