Richard Harris (prospector)
Richard Tighe Harris (October 31, 1833 – October 11, 1907) was an Irish American miner and prospector. Life Richard Harris was born in Banbridge, County Down, Ireland. He then attended Girard College, a private boarding school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is most famous for co-founding, with Joe Juneau, the city of Juneau, Alaska. The first major gold discovery in Juneau or Douglas Island (across from Juneau) was around 1880. It has been the political capital of Alaska since 1906. His Native American guide in southeastern Alaska was Chief Kowee. Kowee is credited with discovering much of the Juneau area. Richard and Joe were sent with Kowee by George Pilz, an entrepreneur from Sitka. Harris and Juneau traded with the natives much of their grubstake for hoochinoo. When they returned to Pilz empty-handed, he sent them back to the Juneau area. Banbridge
Banbridge ( , ) is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies on the River Bann and the A1 road (Northern Ireland), A1 road and is named after a bridge built over the River Bann in 1712. It is situated in the Civil parishes in Ireland, civil parish of Seapatrick and the historic Barony (geographic), barony of Iveagh Upper, Upper Half. The town began as a Coach (vehicle), coaching stop on the road from Belfast to Dublin and thrived from Irish linen manufacturing. Douglas Island
Douglas Island is a tidal island in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is part of the city and borough of Juneau, just west of downtown Juneau and east of Admiralty Island. It is separated from mainland Juneau by the Gastineau Channel, and contains the communities of Douglas and West Juneau. History Douglas Island was named for John Douglas, Bishop of Salisbury, by Captain George Vancouver. Joseph Whidbey, master of during Vancouver's expedition, was the first to sight it in 1794. Evergreen Cemetery (Juneau, Alaska)
Evergreen Cemetery is a cemetery in Juneau, the capital of the U.S. state of Alaska. It was established in 1887 to replace the older cemetery on Chicken Ridge, near Main Street, when that location was staked as a gold mine. Most of the graves in this older cemetery were moved to the new cemetery between 1889 and 1892 and the rest were moved in about 1915. The grounds were deeded by Evergreen Cemetery Association to the City of Juneau on May 23, 1907. Evergreen Cemetery is operated by the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation, and was Juneau's main cemetery from 1887 until Alaskan Memorial Park in Mendenhall Valley opened in the 1970s. Kowee Creek (also spelled as Cowee, Kow-eeh, or Kowie) is a river on Douglas Island in the City and Borough of Juneau, Alaska, United States. Its origin is southeast of Mount Troy and it flows north-northeast to Gastineau Channel near West Juneau; it is southwest of the city of Juneau. Kowee Creek is nearly long. The Silver Bow Basin, often written as Silverbow Basin, is a valley located northeast of Juneau, Alaska, USA. It is situated on Gold Creek in an area north of Icy Gulch, and approximately north of Gastineau Peak. A trail from Juneau leads directly to the mountainside.
