Richard Gustavus Hamilton-Russell
Brigadier Richard Gustavus Hamilton-Russell DSO, LVO, DL (4 February 1909 – 2 March 1999) was an Irish peer, soldier and polo player. Biography He was the son of Gustavus William Hamilton-Russell, 9th Viscount Boyne and Lady Margaret Selina Lascelles. He was educated at Eton College. Hamilton-Russell fought in World War II and was decorated with the award of Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1943 and the award of Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) (and bar) in 1944. He became a Brigadier in the 17th/21st Lancers. In 1956 he became a member of the Gentlemen at Arms the British Monarch's personal bodyguard. The Distinguished Service Order (DSO) is a military decoration of the United Kingdom, as well as formerly of other parts of the Commonwealth, awarded for meritorious or distinguished service by officers of the armed forces during wartime, typically in actual combat. Since 1993 it has been awarded specifically for 'highly successful command and leadership during active operations', with all ranks being eligible. Herbert Robin Cayzer, 1st Baron Rotherwick DL (23 July 1881 – 16 March 1958), known as Sir Herbert Cayzer, 1st Baronet, from 1924 to 1939, was a British shipping magnate and Conservative Party politician. Cayzer was the fifth son of Sir Charles Cayzer, 1st Baronet, and his wife Agnes Elisabeth (née Trickey). Sir August Bernard Tellefsen Cayzer, 1st Baronet, was his elder brother. Cayzer was Chairman of the British & Commonwealth Steamship Company Ltd, of Clan Line Steamers Ltd and of the Union Castle Mail Steamship Company Ltd and also sat as Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth South from 1918 to 1922. Shortly after the 1922 general election, he stood down in order that Leslie Wilson, the Chief Whip, could take the seat – Wilson had been defeated in his own constituency. The Roehampton trophy is the oldest polo trophy in the United Kingdom. The trophy was first played for at the Roehampton Club in 1902 and was won by Buccaneers. Today it is played for at the Ham Polo Club, the tournament is played for at an 6-goal level and the finals are held in August. History The Roehampton Cup is the oldest cup still played for in the United Kingdom, the earliest date on its plinth is the season of 1902 and it was the premier trophy at the Roehampton Polo Club until its demise in 1955.
