Richard Gordon (actor)
Richard Gordon was an American actor in vaudeville and films and on stage and radio. He was perhaps best known for portraying the title role in the radio version of ''The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes''. Early years A native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Gordon worked as a reporter on a newspaper there before he moved to New York City and became a reporter for the ''New York World''. His earnings paid for his studies at Yale and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Radio In addition to his work in ''The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'' from 1931 to 1933, Gordon's roles on old-time radio included those shown in the table below: Gordon also was heard on ''The Biblical Hour'' and in Shakespearean productions. ''Stella Dallas'' was an America radio soap opera that ran from October 25, 1937, to December 23, 1955. ''The New York Times'' described the title character as "the beautiful daughter of an impoverished farmhand who had married above her station in life." She was played for the entire run of the series by Anne Elstner. Her husband Stephen Dallas was portrayed at various times by Leo McCabe, Arthur Hughes and Frederick Tazere. Initially, Joy Hathaway played Stella's daughter Laurel with Vivian Smolen later taking over the role. The series was adapted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories by scriptwriter Edith Meiser. For most of the series, Richard Gordon played Sherlock Holmes and Leigh Lovell played Dr. Watson. The series included multiple original stories by Meiser, in addition to Meiser's adaptations of all of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories except one. The Bishop and the Gargoyle is a 30-minute old-time radio crime drama in the United States. It was broadcast on the NBC Blue network September 30, 1936 - January 3, 1942. The program was unique in being a radio network prime-time drama with a church leader as its central character. Format Episodes of ''The Bishop and the Gargoyle'' focused on the combined crime-fighting efforts of a retiring bishop of a church and a convict called the Gargoyle. As a member of the parole board at Sing Sing Prison, the Bishop met and befriended the Gargoyle. In return, the inmate helped the bishop "to track criminals and bring them to justice."
