Richard Felix Marchand
Richard Felix Marchand (August 25, 1813, Berlin – August 2, 1850, Halle an der Saale) was a German chemist. His son was the physician Felix Jacob Marchand (1846–1928). In 1840, Marchand was appointed professor at the University of Berlin. In 1843, he accepted an appointment as associate professor of chemistry at the University of Halle. In 1846, he became full professor there. Together with Otto Linné Erdmann, he was editor of the ''Journal für praktischen Chemie'' ("Journal of Practical Chemistry") from 1839. Felix Jacob Marchand
Felix Jacob Marchand (22 October 1846 – 4 February 1928) was a German pathologist born in Halle an der Saale. He studied medicine in University of Berlin, Berlin, and later became an assistant at the pathological institute in University of Halle, Halle. In 1881 he became a professor of pathological anatomy in University of Giessen, Giessen, and two years later garnered the same position at University of Marburg, Marburg. In 1900 he succeeded pathologist Felix Victor Birch-Hirschfeld (1842-1899) at the University of Leipzig. In 1904 Marchand is credited with coining the term atherosclerosis from the Greek "athero", meaning gruel, and "sclerosis", meaning hardening, to describe the fatty substance inside a hardened artery. His name is lent to the eponymous "Marchand's adrenals", which is accessory adrenal tissue in the broad ligament of the uterus. Otto Linné Erdmann
Otto Linné Erdmann (11 April 1804 – 9 October 1869) was a German chemist. He was the son of Karl Gottfried Erdmann, the physician who introduced vaccination into Saxony. He was born in Dresden on 11 April 1804. In 1820 he began to attend the medico-chirurgical academy of his native place, and in 1822 he entered the University of Leipzig, where in 1827 he became an associate professor, and in 1830 a full professor of chemistry. This office he held until his death, which happened at Leipzig on 9 October 1869. He was particularly successful as a teacher, and the laboratory established at Leipzig under his direction in 1843 was long regarded as a model institution. ''Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie'' (ADB, german: Universal German Biography) is one of the most important and comprehensive biographical reference works in the German language. It was published by the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences between 1875 and 1912 in 56 volumes, printed in Leipzig by Duncker & Humblot. The ADB contains biographies of about 26,500 people who died before 1900 and lived in the German language Sprachraum of their time, including people from the Netherlands before 1648. Cholera
Cholera is an infection of the small intestine by some strains of the bacterium ''Vibrio cholerae''. Symptoms may range from none, to mild, to severe. The classic symptom is large amounts of watery diarrhea that lasts a few days. Vomiting and muscle cramps may also occur. Diarrhea can be so severe that it leads within hours to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. This may result in sunken eyes, cold skin, decreased skin elasticity, and wrinkling of the hands and feet. Dehydration can cause the skin to turn bluish. An airship or dirigible balloon is a type of aerostat or lighter-than-air aircraft that can navigate through the air under its own power. Aerostats gain their lift from a lifting gas that is less dense than the surrounding air.
