Richard Mór Burke
Ricarde Mór Burke, 9th Clanricarde or Mac William Uachtar (; ; died 1530) was an Irish chieftain and noble. Background Burke was the second son of Ulick Fionn Burke, 6th Clanricarde (d.1509) and Slaine Ni Con Mara (Slany MacNamara), succeeding as chieftain in 1520 upon the death of his brother, Ulick Óge Burke, 8th Clanricarde (d.1520). Career In 1522 he was part of a confederation of Connacht forces that marched to Sligo to give battle to the O'Donnells, who were conquering north Connacht. However, the expedition fell apart without a fight after the failure of Conn Bacach O'Neill to defeat O'Donnell. Family Burke married Margaret Butler, daughter to Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond (Ireland). He was succeeded by the grandson of his uncle Edmund (d.1466), John mac Richard Mór Burke, 10th Clanricarde (d.1536), who ruled till 1536. Richard (Dick) Burke (June 4, 1934 – March 9, 2008) was the co-founder of Trek Bicycle Corporation. Trek is known among cyclists for making the bikes that Lance Armstrong rode in his Tour de France victories. Early history Burke was born in Chicago in 1934 and moved to Milwaukee when he enrolled at Marquette University. After graduating, he worked for several companies including an appliance distribution business. Trek Bicycle In December, 1975, Richard (Dick) Burke and Bevil Hogg established Trek Bicycle as a wholly owned subsidiary of Roth Corporation, a Milwaukee-based appliance distributor. In early 1976, with a payroll of five, Trek started manufacturing steel touring frames in Waterloo, Wisconsin, taking aim at the mid to high-end market do by Japanese and Italian made models. Richard Óge Burke, 7th Clanricarde or Mac William Uachtar (; ; died 1519) was an Irish chieftain and noble who was the ancestor of the Burkes of Derrymaclachtna. Life Richard Óge was a son of a previous chieftain, Ulick Ruadh Burke, 5th Clanricarde (d.1485), and a brother of Ulick Fionn Burke, 6th Clanricarde (d.1509) whom he succeeded as chieftain in 1509. Richard's son, Sir Uilleag Burke, became 13th Clanricarde in disputed circumstances in 1544. Richard Edward Burke (29 March 1932 – 15 March 2016) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as European Commissioner for Interinstitutional Relations and Administration from 1982 to 1985, European Commissioner for Taxation, Consumer Affairs, Transport and Parliamentary Relations from 1977 to 1981 and Minister for Education from 1973 to 1976. Richard Burke, 8th Earl Of Clanricarde
Richard Burke, 8th Earl of Clanricarde (; ; died 1709); styled Lord Dunkellin (; ) until 1687; was an Irish peer who served as Custos Rotulorum of Galway. Career Richard was the elder son of William Burke, 7th Earl of Clanricarde and appears to have been the first of the family to conform (to the Protestant faith), as Charles II wrote to his father congratulating him on "being thoroughly instructed in the protestant religion as it stands established, having forsaken that of Rome which hath always given jealousies to the crown". He was made Baron Dunkellin in 1680. His brother, Ulick, commanded a regiment of foot at the Battle of Aughrim where he was killed, aged twenty-two. Clanricarde commanded a regiment of infantry during the Williamite War in Ireland and surrendered the town of Galway in July 1690. He was appointed Custos Rotulorum of County Galway.
