Richard Larm Alderson (born February 10, 1937) is an American audio engineer and record producer, who has worked on recordings by Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, Harry Belafonte, Sun Ra, The Fugs, Pearls Before Swine, Roberta Flack, Grover Washington Jr. and others. Biography Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, he grew up in New York City. After graduating he worked in record stores, and then selling and installing audio equipment, before being employed by inventor Sherman Fairchild as an audio engineer. He also began recording performers in folk clubs in New York, such as the Village Gate, working on the sound system in parallel with lighting engineer Chip Monck. His first commercially released live recordings were of Nina Simone, released on the albums ''Nina at the Village Gate'' (1962) and ''Nina Simone at Carnegie Hall'' (1963). He also recorded performances by Thelonious Monk, and early Bob Dylan performances eventually released many years later as ''Live at The Gaslight 1962''. ...

''Nina Simone at the Village Gate'' is an album by singer / pianist / songwriter Nina Simone. Released in early 1962, it was her third live album for Colpix (and sixth album overall). The album was recorded at The Village Gate, a nightclub in Greenwich Village, New York in late March 1961, nearly a year before it saw release. The original release featured eight of the twelve songs performed at the gig. In 2005, an extended version of the album was released with the four remaining tracks. Background It is particularly notable for the number of folk songs and African related songs on the album early in Simone's career. Albert Ayler (; July 13, 1936 – November 25, 1970) was an American avant-garde jazz saxophonist, singer and composer. After early experience playing R&B and bebop, Ayler began recording music during the free jazz era of the 1960s. However, some critics argue that while Ayler's style is undeniably original and unorthodox, it does not adhere to the generally accepted critical understanding of free jazz. ESP-Disk is a New York-based record company and label founded in 1963 by lawyer Bernard Stollman. History Though it originally existed to release Esperanto-based music, beginning with its second release (Albert Ayler's ''Spiritual Unity''), ESP became the most important exponent of what is commonly referred to as free jazz. Early releases included albums by Paul Bley, Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra. ESP also released recordings by uncommercial underground rock acts including the Fugs, The Godz and Pearls Before Swine. Prestige Records is a jazz record company and label founded in 1949 by Bob Weinstock in New York City which issued recordings in the mainstream, bop, and cool jazz idioms. The company recorded hundreds of albums by many of the leading jazz musicians of the day, sometimes issuing them on subsidiary labels. Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Joe Bataan (also spelled Bataán) (born Bataan Nitollano; November 15, 1942) is a Latin soul musician from New York. Early life Joe Bataan was born Bataan Nitollano and grew up in the 103rd Street and Lexington Avenue part of East Harlem in New York. In East Harlem, Bataan briefly led the Dragons, a local Puerto Rican street gang. Bataan served time in the Coxsackie Correctional Facility for a stolen car charge. His father was Filipino and his mother was African American. Career Upon his release from prison in 1965, Bataan turned his attention to music and formed his first band, Joe Bataan and the Latin Swingers. The Bob Dylan World Tour 1966 was a concert tour undertaken by American musician Bob Dylan, from February to May 1966. Dylan's 1966 World Tour was notable as the first tour where Dylan employed an electric band backing him, following him " going electric" at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. The musicians Dylan employed as his backing band were known as The Hawks, who later became famous as The Band. Photographer Barry Feinstein (who had shot the cover of Dylan's album The Times They Are a-Changin’ in 1964) accompanied Dylan on the UK leg of the tour at the musician's behest to document the tour, both onstage and off. Albert Bernard Grossman (May 21, 1926 – January 25, 1986) was an American entrepreneur and manager in the American folk music and rock and roll scene. He was famous as the manager of many of the most popular and successful performers of folk and folk-rock music, including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Peter, Paul and Mary, the Band, Odetta, Gordon Lightfoot and Ian & Sylvia.
