''Rich in London'' a.k.a. ''Very Alive at Ronnie Scotts'' is a live album by Buddy Rich and his big band, recorded in 1971 at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. Not to be confused with the 1980 DRG Buddy Rich Big Band recording, '' Live at Ronnie Scott's''. Release history The US LP release, ''Rich in London'', contains 8 tracks plus a Rich monologue. The UK release, ''Very Alive at Ronnie Scotts'', is a double LP containing an additional 5 tracks plus more examples of Rich talking to the audience. Both albums have been re-issued on CD. The Mosaic Records single CD re-issue of ''Rich in London'' includes 4 additional bonus tracks (4 of the "missing" 5 tracks from the UK ''"Very Alive..."'' release - all but "Superstar" - but not the additional Rich monologue). Buddy Rich
Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer, songwriter, conductor, and bandleader. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time. Rich was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He discovered his affinity for jazz music at a young age and began drumming at the age of two. He began playing jazz in 1937, working with acts such as Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, and Harry James. From 1942 to 1944, Rich served in the U.S. Marines. From 1945 to 1948, he led the Buddy Rich Orchestra. In 1966, he recorded a big-band style arrangement of songs from ''West Side Story''. He found lasting success in 1966 with the formation of the Buddy Rich Big Band, also billed as the Buddy Rich Band and The Big Band Machine. John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (; October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer. He was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuosic style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard in jazz. His combination of musicianship, showmanship, and wit made him a leading popularizer of the new music called bebop. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, scat singing, bent horn, pouched cheeks, and light-hearted personality provided one of bebop's most prominent symbols. In the 1940s, Gillespie, with Charlie Parker, became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. Lin Biviano
Franklin "Lin" Biviano is an American jazz trumpeter best known for his powerful lead trumpet playing with Buddy Rich, Count Basie, and Maynard Ferguson. He has also played and recorded with Hoagy Carmichael, Jo Ann Castle, Bill Chase, Buddy DeFranco, Jimmy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Herman, Milt Jackson, Harry James, Stan Kenton, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Steve Smith, Mel Tormé, Sarah Vaughan, Fats Waller, and Lawrence Welk, mostly playing lead trumpet. "In a Mellow Tone", also known as "In a Mellotone", is a 1939 jazz standard composed by Duke Ellington, with lyrics written by Milt Gabler. Superstar (Jesus Christ Superstar Song)
"Superstar" is the title song from the 1970 album and 1971 rock opera ''Jesus Christ Superstar'' written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Content The song is sung by the spirit of Judas Iscariot, who had committed suicide earlier in the show. The song consists of a series of questions addressed to Jesus, such as why Jesus chose to come to Israel in 4 BC when it had no "mass communication" as opposed to modern times, whether Jesus had planned his own death, whether Jesus knew beforehand that his death would become famous, and whether religious figures such as Gautama Buddha and Muhammad are his equals. "Milestones" is a jazz composition written by Miles Davis. It appears on the Milestones (Miles Davis album), album of the same name in 1958. It has since become a jazz standard. "Milestones" is the first example of Miles composing in a Modal jazz, modal style and experimentation in this piece led to the writing of "So What (composition), So What" from the 1959 album ''Kind of Blue''. The song's modes consist of G Dorian mode, Dorian for 16 bars, A Aeolian mode, Aeolian for another 16 bars, and then back to G Dorian for the last eight bars, then the progression repeats. Willis Leonard Holman (born May 21, 1927), known professionally as Bill Holman, is an American composer, arranger, conductor, saxophonist, and songwriter working in jazz and traditional pop. His career is over seven decades long, having started with the Charlie Barnet orchestra in 1950. Early life Bill Holman was born in Olive, California, United States.
