Cloth ribbons are made of natural materials such as silk, cotton, and jute and of synthetic materials, such as polyester, nylon, and polypropylene. Ribbon is used for useful, ornamental, and symbolic purposes. Cultures around the world use ribbon in their hair, around the human body, body, and as ornament (art), ornament on non-human animals, buildings, and Packaging and labeling, packaging. Some popular fabrics used to make ribbons are satin, organza, sheer fabric, sheer, silk, velvet, and grosgrain. Etymology The word ribbon comes from Middle English ''ribban'' or ''riban'' from Old French ''ruban'', which is probably of Germanic languages, Germanic origin. Ribbon (mathematics)
In differential geometry, a ribbon (or strip) is the combination of a smooth space curve and its corresponding normal vector. More formally, a ribbon denoted by (X,U) includes a curve X given by a three-dimensional vector X(s), depending continuously on the curve arc-length s (a\leq s \leq b), and a unit vector U(s) perpendicular to X at each point. Ribbons have seen particular application as regards DNA. Properties and implications The ribbon (X,U) is called ''simple'' if X is a simple curve (i.e. without self-intersections) and ''closed'' and if U and all its derivatives agree at a and b. For any simple closed ribbon the curves X+\varepsilon U given parametrically by X(s)+\varepsilon U(s) are, for all sufficiently small positive \varepsilon, simple closed curves disjoint from X. The ribbon concept plays an important role in the Călugăreanu-White-Fuller formula, that states that :Lk = Wr + Tw , where Lk is the asymptotic (Gauss) ''linking number'', the integer number of tu ...

Ribbon (rhythmic Gymnastics)
In rhythmic gymnastics, a gymnastics ribbon is an apparatus composed of a handle (called "stick"), a ribbon, and attachment, that is used during a floor performance. Handle The handle can be of any colour and is usually made of wood, bamboo, or plastic. It has a maximum diameter of 1 cm (2/5") at its widest, a cylindrical or conical shape slip tape or may have a rubber handle for a maximum length of 10 cm (4") at the level of the grip. The top of #a supple strap (of string or nylon) held in place by a nylon thread wound round the stick for a #a metal ring fixed directly onto the stick. #a metal ring (vertical, horizontal or oblique) fixed to the stick by two metal pins held in place by nylon or metallic thread round wound around the stick for the maximum 5 cm (2"). #a metal ring (fixed, mobile or pivoting) or a supple strap, fixed to a metal tip of no more than 3 cm (1.2"). Ribbon The ribbon is made of satin or another similar cloth, and can be of any colour. ...

Ribbon Ridge AVA
The Ribbon Ridge AVA is an American Viticultural Area in Yamhill County, Oregon. It is the smallest AVA in Oregon and is entirely contained within the Chehalem Mountains AVA, which in turn is entirely contained within the larger Willamette Valley AVA The Willamette Valley AVA ( ) is an American Viticultural Area which lies in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The AVA is the wine growing region which encompasses the drainage basin of the Willamette River. It stretches from the Columbia Rive .... Ribbon Ridge stretches between the towns of Newberg and Gaston. The ridge is defined by local geographic boundaries and an uplift of ocean sediment. It lies at 45° 21' N latitude and 123° 04' W longitude, at the northwest end of the Chehalem Mountains. Colby Carter, an early settler from Missouri, named Ribbon Ridge in 1865, and the ridge has been known by that name ever since. The first official use of the Ribbon Ridge name dates to 1888 with the creation of Ribbon Ri ...

Ribbon Knot
In the mathematical area of knot theory, a ribbon knot is a knot that bounds a self-intersecting disk with only ''ribbon singularities''. Intuitively, this kind of singularity can be formed by cutting a slit in the disk and passing another part of the disk through the slit. More precisely, this type of singularity is a closed arc consisting of intersection points of the disk with itself, such that the preimage of this arc consists of two arcs in the disc, one completely in the interior of the disk and the other having its two endpoints on the disk boundary. Morse-theoretic formulation A slice disc ''M'' is a smoothly embedded D^2 in D^4 with M \cap \partial D^4 = \partial M \subset S^3. Consider the function f\colon D^4 \to \mathbb R given by f(x,y,z,w) = x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2. By a small isotopy of ''M'' one can ensure that ''f'' restricts to a Morse function on ''M''. One says \partial M \subset \partial D^4 = S^3 is a ribbon knot if f_\colon M \to \mathbb R has no interior local ...

Awareness Ribbon
Awareness ribbons are symbols meant to show support or raise consciousness for a cause. Different colours and patterns are associated with different issues. Yellow ribbons, in the United States, are used to show that a close family member is abroad in military service. In Russia, Belarus and other countries of the former Soviet Union, gold and black striped ribbons are used to celebrate the Allies' victory in World War II (9 May). In Spain since 2017, a yellow ribbon is a symbol of solidarity with the 2017–18 Spanish constitutional crisis in provisional detention. Of the uses of ribbons to draw awareness to health issues, perhaps the best-known is the pink ribbon for support of those with breast cancer. Other health and social concerns which have adopted coloured ribbons include Alzheimer's disease, pancreatic cancer (purple), HIV/AIDS (red), mental health and mental illness (green), suicide prevention (yellow), and brain disorder or disability (silver). Political use of r ...
