Rhodesia At The Paralympics
Rhodesia was one of the participants at the inaugural Paralympic Games in 1960 in Rome, where one of its two representatives was Margaret Harriman, in swimming and archery. The country took part in every edition of the Summer Paralympics until 1972. Although Rhodesia was barred from all Olympics from 1968 until its disestablishment in 1979 after its 1965 Unilateral Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom, it was allowed to participate in the 1968 Tel Aviv and 1972 Heidelberg games because politicians, both from Britain and the host nations of the games, were unwilling to sanction athletes with disabilities. However, the Canadian government refused to grant visas for the Rhodesian Paralympic team to attend the 1976 Toronto Paralympics. Rhodesia ceased to exist before the 1980 Summer Paralympics, in which its successor state, Zimbabwe, competed.

The flag of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) changed with political developments in the country. At independence in 1965 the recently adopted flag of Southern Rhodesia was used, until a new flag (the green and white tricolour) was adopted in 1968. Sandra James
Sandra James is a Zimbabwean former athlete, who won eleven medals across four different sports at the Paralympic Games. 1972: representing Rhodesia James initially represented Rhodesia at the 1972 Summer Paralympics, competing in athletics and swimming. In athletics, she entered the discus, javelin and shot put in the 1A category. In the discus, she took bronze with a throw of 6.00m, behind German and Argentinian competitors. In the javelin, her throw of 5.22m was well clear of any competition, enabling her to win the gold medal; J. Murland of Canada came second with 4.68m. In the shot put, Dutch athlete de Vries-Noordam dominated the field with a throw of 2.59, but James' result, 1.96m, was just enough for second place, ahead of Murland (1.91). The wrong reports Since at the dawn of the Paralympic Games there was no precision in reporting the results of the competitions, the Israeli athlete Michal Escapa was indicated with the Italian nationality and without prename (and so she is mentioned in the International Paralympic Committee of the Italian Paralympic Committee web sites) for the reports of the Swimming at the 1964 Summer Paralympics where she won two bronze medals, simply reported as Escapa and not as Michal Escapa. However, as can be seen from a 1968 Israeli newspaper reporting an interview with the athlete, she was the same athlete who had won medals in swimming and table tennis in Tokyo 1964.
