Rheum Maximowiczii
''Rheum maximowiczii'' is a large herbaceous perennial plant species in the genus ''Rheum (plant), Rheum'' (rhubarbs) from the mountains of Central Asia where it grows in Kazakhstan, eastern Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and northeastern Afghanistan. Taxonomy This species first appeared before modern science in the herbarium of Karl Maximovich, in which he labelled the specimen as ''Rheum megalacarpum''. One of the first Europeans to write about this species was the General Nikolai Ivanovich Korolkov, who was engaged in the conquering of Turkestan, and collected herbarium specimens of this plant there in the early 1870s. Another early collector was Johann Albert von Regel, who collected specimens of this species less than a decade later in the highlands throughout the region (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan). The Zarafshan Range (russian: Зеравшанский хребет, ''Zeravšanskij hrebet''; tg, Зарафшон; uz, Zarafshon; also Zeravshan or Zarafshon; from Persian ''Zar-afshān'', meaning "the sprayer of gold") is a mountain range in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, part of the Pamir-Alay mountains. Almost all of the range belongs to the drainage basins of the Zarafshan River. ''Rheum ribes'', the Syrian rhubarb or currant-fruited rhubarb, or warty-leaved rhubarb, is an edible wild rhubarb species in the genus ''Rheum''. It grows between 1000 and 4000 m on dunite rocks, among stones and slopes, and is now distributed in the temperate and subtropical regions of the world, chiefly in Western Asia (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia) to Afghanistan and Pakistan and also in ladakh(Kargil) region of India. Vladimir Leontyevich Komarov (russian: Влади́мир Лео́нтьевич Комаро́в; – 5 December 1945) was a Russian and Soviet botanist. Biography Komarov was born in 1869. He was a graduate of St. Petersburg University where he received a degree in botany in 1894. He worked as a professor at the university in the period 1898–1934. Until his death in 1945, he was senior editor of the ''Flora SSSR'' (Flora of the U.S.S.R.), in full comprising 30 volumes published between 1934 and 1960.
