Rhegion, also called "Rhagion" or "Rhegium", ( grc, Ῥήγιον) was a town (sometimes described as a military compound) of ancient Thrace, inhabited during Byzantine times. Küçükçekmece
Küçükçekmece (; meaning “small-drawer”, from much earlier ''Rhagion'' and ''Küçükçökmece as “little breakdown''" or “''little depression''”, in more ancient times just as Bathonea), is a suburb and district of Istanbul, Turkey, 23 kilometers west of the city centre and laying next to Lake Küçükçekmece. Both the lake and land reside on the European shore of the Sea of Marmara. Lake Küçükçekmece
Lake Küçükçekmece ( tr, Küçükçekmece Gölü) is a lagoon located between the Küçükçekmece, Esenyurt and Avcılar districts of the European portion of Istanbul Province, northwestern Turkey. The lake is neighbored in the south by state road D.100 and in the north by the O-3 motorway (European route E80). The proposed controversial Istanbul Canal is intended to pass through the lake, though the so-called construction of the canal has been in-halt ever since its construction started by ceremony back in 2021. Location and characteristics Situated west of Istanbul's city center, the lake was formed in shallow water when a sandbank caused its separation from the Sea of Marmara. Bathonea
Bathonea ( grc, Βαθονεία) is a long-lost ancient Greek city (or village) that was located on the European shore of the sea of Marmara, 20 km west from Istanbul, Turkey in Küçükçekmece. The settlement was at some point home to some of the Varangian Guards, elite Norsemen guards & settlers in Constantinople. The ruins of this town, which have always remained visible, were studied extensively in 1930, specially during the Republican era by the Swiss archeologist Ernest Mamboury,Mamboury (1953) who firstly thought and identified the settlement as the town of Rhegion based on some ancient sources. In 2009 though, a new identification was proposed, as the ''Hellenistic-Roman city of Bathonea,'' which the fact is currently accepted today.
