Rhea County Department of Education, also known as Rhea County Schools or Rhea School District, is a school district headquartered in Dayton, Tennessee. It serves students in the county, except for the City of Dayton, for elementary and middle school, as well as high school students throughout the entire county. Dayton is a city and county seat in Rhea County, Tennessee, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 7,065. The Dayton Urban Cluster, which includes developed areas adjacent to the city and extends south to Graysville. Dayton was the site of the Scopes Trial in 1925 dealing with the creation–evolution controversy. History The community was originally settled ''circa'' 1820 as Smith's Crossroads. In 1877, the town was renamed Dayton, after Dayton, Ohio. The town was incorporated in 1903. Early industry included manufacture of pig iron. Scopes trial In 1925, the famous Scopes Trial was held in Dayton and, for a period of time, filled the town with hucksters of every description and journalists from around the world. The participants included William Jennings Bryan in the role of prosecutor and Clarence Darrow as the principal defense counsel. Rhea County High School is a high school in Evensville, Tennessee. It serves Rhea County, Tennessee, which includes Dayton, Spring City and Graysville. It has an enrollment of 1,469. Its mascot is a golden eagle. It is a part of Rhea County Schools. History In 2013, Rhea County High School celebrated their 40th year since the school was established and Spring City and Rhea Central were brought together to form what is now well known as Rhea County High School. Also in 2013, following the 40th year celebration of the school, was the building of a new addition that spanned to cover 320,000 square feet. When this switch occurred, the middle school of Rhea County moved into the old high school so that they could have a larger space as well. Spring City, Tennessee
Spring City is a town in Rhea County, Tennessee, Rhea County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,949 at the 2020 census and 1,981 at the 2010 census. The town is located along Watts Bar Lake, and Watts Bar Dam and the Watts Bar Nuclear Generating Station are nearby. History Spring City began as a stop along the Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific Railway, Cincinnati Southern Railroad in the 1870s. The town was originally named Sulphur Springs, because of the mass amount of sulphur in the water. Sometime later it became "Rheaville," and later became incorporated with nearby Rhea Springs, and took on the name Rhea Springs. Due to an explosion, much of the town flooded or burnt, and the town relocated to its current location and was renamed Spring City, in honor of the original settlement, Sulphur Springs. Graysville, Tennessee
Graysville is a town in Rhea County, Tennessee, Rhea County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2020 census and 1,502 at the 2010 census. History Graysville is named for William Gray, an early settler who was appointed postmaster in 1875. The town expanded in the 1880s, when the arrival of the railroad brought coal extraction industries to the area. During this period, the Dayton Coal and Iron Company established a major operation at Graysville. Coal mined nearby was converted into coke (fuel), coke, which in turn was used to fuel two blast furnaces to produce pig iron. This operation continued until the Great Depression brought about a general collapse in the industry in the 1930s.E. Dayton City School
Dayton City School (DCS) is a municipal school district in Dayton, Tennessee which consists of a single K-8 school. The district's attendance boundary is the city limits of Dayton. High school students attend Rhea County High School, operated by Rhea County Schools. History The school was established in 1907. In 1948 the University of Tennessee established an extension program that allowed for teachers at Rhea County Schools to study for a bachelor's degree. Dayton City School teachers were eligible for the same program. In February 1951 the school had 350 students. Clippingat Newspapers.com. That month a fire damaged the school facility. Two wings, which included the auditorium and cafeteria, were not damaged, while the fire severely damaged the classroom wings. L. A.
