Reynold K. Young
Reynold Kenneth Young (October 4, 1886 – February 27, 1973) was a Canadian astronomer. He served as first director of the David Dunlap Observatory from 1935 until 1946. Biography Young was born on October 4, 1886, in the town of Binbrook, Ontario, the son of Robert Young and Jean Bell. He studied at the Hamilton Collegiate Institute (the city of Hamilton's first high school), then in 1905 he matriculated to the University of Toronto. In 1909 he graduated with a B. A. degree in astronomy, and was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for first class honors. With a fellowship for graduate study at the University of California, Berkeley, Young spent three years as a Fellow at the Lick Observatory. There he met his future wife, Wilhelmina Ellen Aitken, a fellow astronomer and the daughter of the observatory director, Robert G. Aitken. Binbrook, Ontario
Binbrook is a community in southeastern Hamilton, Ontario, in Canada. It was amalgamated into the city of Hamilton in 2001. Since 2001, hundreds of new homes have been built in Binbrook, separated from Hamilton by conservation and agricultural lands. History Armstrong's General Store was a longtime centre of community activity as was the feed mill. In the 1960s, Cybulski's Grocery Store became a hub for the small community. Knox Presbyterian Church, as well as a Baptist church, and Anglican Church all are near the centre of the village. The community of Binbrook has a rich history of agriculture and First Nations peoples. There has been evidence found of Algonquin tribes inhabiting this area. The first registry of Binbrook is in 1791 when it was called Township #11 in the District of Nassau. Spectroscopic Binaries
A binary star is a system of two stars that are gravitationally bound to and in orbit around each other. Binary stars in the night sky that are seen as a single object to the naked eye are often resolved using a telescope as separate stars, in which case they are called ''visual binaries''. Many visual binaries have long orbital periods of several centuries or millennia and therefore have orbits which are uncertain or poorly known. They may also be detected by indirect techniques, such as spectroscopy (''spectroscopic binaries'') or astrometry (''astrometric binaries''). Clarence Augustus Chant
Clarence Augustus Chant (May 31, 1865 – November 18, 1956) was a Canadian astronomer and physicist. Early life and education Chant was born in Hagerman's Corners, Ontario to Christopher Chant and Elizabeth Croft. In 1882 he attended Markham High School, where he demonstrated a mathematical ability. After graduation, he attended St. Catherines Collegiate Institute and York County Model School in Toronto. He left to work as an instructor in 1884, and taught at Maxwell, Osprey Township for the following three years. By 1887 he began studying mathematics and physics at the University College of the University of Toronto, graduating in 1890. William Edmund Harper
William Edmund Harper, March 20, 1878 – June 14, 1940, (age 62) was a Canadian astronomer. William Harper was born in Dobbington, Ontario. He attended high school in Owen Sound, then taught for three years following his graduation. When he had sufficient funds, in 1902 he entered the University of Toronto. He graduated in 1906 and became a member of the staff at the Dominion Observatory in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He worked with the astrophysics staff, measuring the radial velocity of stars and determining the orbits of spectroscopic binaries. (The latter are binary star systems that could not be resolved with a telescope, but their orbital motions could be studied due to the doppler effect on their spectrum.) Stellar Parallax
Stellar parallax is the apparent shift of position of any nearby star (or other object) against the background of distant objects, and a basis for determining (through trigonometry) the distance of the object. Created by the different orbital positions of Earth, the extremely small observed shift is largest at time intervals of about six months, when Earth arrives at opposite sides of the Sun in its orbit, giving a baseline distance of about two astronomical units between observations. Dominion Astrophysical Observatory
The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, located on Observatory Hill, in Saanich, British Columbia, was completed in 1918 by the Canadian government. The Dominion architect responsible for the building was Edgar Lewis Horwood. The main instrument is the Plaskett telescope, proposed and designed by John S. John Stanley Plaskett
John Stanley Plaskett (November 17, 1865 – October 17, 1941) was a Canadian astronomer. Career He worked as a machinist, and was offered a job as a mechanician at the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto, constructing apparatus and assisting with demonstrations during lectures. He found this so interesting that at the age of 30 he enrolled as an undergraduate in mathematics and physics. He stayed at the university until 1903, doing research on color photography. His formal astronomical career did not start until 1903, when he was appointed to the staff at Dominion Observatory in Ottawa, Ontario. He measured radial velocities and studied spectroscopic binaries, and performed the first detailed analysis of galactic structure.
