Rex Baxter
Rex Bernice Baxter, Jr. (born February 28, 1936) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and the Senior PGA Tour. A native of Amarillo, Texas, Baxter won the U.S. Junior Amateur at Tulsa's Southern Hills Country Club in 1953. He attended the University of Houston, where he was an All-American member of the golf team and individually the 1957 NCAA national champion. He won the Cajun Classic Open Invitational in 1963 and the PGA Professional National Championship in 1970. His best finish in a major is T-33 at the 1960 U.S. Open. Baxter was inducted into the University of Houston Athletics Hall of Honor in 1971; he was the first member of the golf team to receive this honor. PGA Cup
The PGA Cup is a men's golf competition for club professionals played between a Great Britain and Ireland team and a United States team. The winning team is presented with the Llandudno Trophy. The competition is run by the British PGA and the PGA of America. It was first played in 1973 and was an annual event until 1984, after which it became biennial. The 2022 event was held at the Foxhills Golf Club in Surrey, England, the second time that the course had been chosen to host the event. The United States won by five points, to retain the trophy they won in 2019. History The first two contests, at Pinehurst, North Carolina in 1973 and 1974, were contested for the Diamondhead Cup. Americas Cup (golf)
The Americas Cup was a biennial men's team golf tournament between teams of amateurs golfers from the United States, Canada and Mexico. It was held nine times between 1952 and 1967. The United States won all the matches except in 1965 when Canada won the cup. The matches followed on from an informal match that had been played in 1951 at Saucon Valley Country Club between teams from the United States and Canada. A trophy was donated by Jerome P. Bowes, Jr. The event was held in even-numbered years from 1952 to 1960 when there was no Walker Cup match. However from 1961 to 1967 it was held in odd-numbered years, to avoid clashing with the Eisenhower Trophy which started in 1958 and was held in even-numbered years. The venue cycled between the United States, Canada and Mexico. Until 1967 teams consisted of seven players, six of whom played in each session. 1957 Walker Cup
The 1957 Walker Cup, the 16th Walker Cup Match, was played on August 30 and 31, 1957, at the Minikahda Club, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The United States won by 8 matches to 3 with one match halved. Format Four 36-hole matches of foursomes were played on Friday and eight singles matches on Saturday. Each of the 12 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 36th hole extra holes were not played. The team with most points won the competition. If the two teams were tied, the previous winner would retain the trophy. Walker Cup
The Walker Cup is a golf trophy contested in odd-numbered years by leading male amateur golfers in two teams: United States, and Great Britain and Ireland. The official name is the Walker Cup Match (not "Matches" as in Ryder Cup Matches). It is organised by The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA). In 1921 the Royal Liverpool Golf Club hosted an unofficial contest which was followed by official annual contests from 1922 through 1924. From 1925 they became biennial, held on even-number years. After World War II they switched to odd-numbered years. They are held alternately in the U.S., and Ireland or Britain. The Brazil Open or Aberto do Brasil is an annual golf tournament held in Brazil. It was founded in 1945 and was an event on the Tour de las Américas on several occasions, most recently in 2005. It is now an event on PGA Tour Latinoamérica. Waterloo Open Golf Classic
The Waterloo Jaycees Greater Waterloo Open Golf Classic is the oldest and largest golf tournament in the state of Iowa. It has been played annually since 1934, and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2008. It is traditionally played over the course of third week/weekend in the month of July. The tournament actually consists of five separate tournaments which are organized and run simultaneously by a volunteer committee of Waterloo Jaycees. The tournaments are played on the three public golf courses in Waterloo, Iowa.
