Rex-Acme
Rex, Rex Motorcycles, Rex-Acme, (not to be confused with the German manufacturer of similar name) was a car and motorcycle company which began in Birmingham, England in 1900. Rex soon merged with a Coventry maker of bicycles and cars named Allard and then later in 1922 the company merged with Coventry's 'Acme' motorcycle company forming 'Rex Acme'. The company existed until 1933, and, in its heyday, was considered one of the greatest names in the British motorcycle industry. Company History William Williamson formed the Birmingham Motor Manufacturing and Supply Co in mid-1901. William was described as having entered the motor trade a few years before and as being well known in racing circles, and was an ex-winner of the Catford Hill-Climb (on a bicycle). Walter Leslie Handley (5 April 1902 – 15 November 1941) born in Aston, Birmingham, Kolumbus.fi Walter Leslie Handley (Retrieved 10 December 2006) known as Wal Handley, was a champion British inter-war motorcycle racer with four wins at the Races in his career. Acme Motor Co
The Acme Motor Co is a defunct manufacturer of motorcycles that operated from premises in Earlsdon, Coventry. The company started manufacturing in 1902. It was taken over by Rex motorcycles sometime before 1920. In 1922 the name of the company was changed to ''Coventry Acme Motor Co'', later that year the company was merged with Rex motorcycles to form Rex-Acme. History Pre-WW1 The first motorcycles produced in 1902 used Minerva engines. Models using 2.75hp and 4.5hp Automoto engines were soon added, as was a 3hp model with an engine made by Acme. From 1904 the Automoto engines were produced under license by Acme. In 1908 two machines were entered in the Isle of Man TT, but both retired on the first lap. Blackburne (motorcycles)
Blackburne was a trade name of Burney and Blackburne Limited a British manufacturer of motorcycles from 1913 to 1922 at Tongham near Farnham, Surrey. They were also a major supplier of engines to other motor cycle and light car makers and continued to make these until 1937. Burney and Blackburne also made small aircraft engines. Blackburne Motorcycles The origins of the Blackburne motorcycle engine start with Geoffrey de Havilland, who had designed and built a motor cycle before he became interested in aviation. In about 1905 he sold the designs and patterns to two student friends for £5 when he was short of money, and they went on to form the Blackburne engine company. Williamson Flat Twin
The Williamson Flat Twin was motorcycle made in Coventry, UK by William ('Billy') Williamson, who had been managing director of the Coventry-based Rex company. He teamed up with William Douglas (of Douglas Motorcycles to develop new prototype motorcycles under the name Williamson-Douglas and employed Billy's brother Harold as a test rider. Douglas had been developing a 964 cc water-cooled flat twin engine that could be used either for light cars or motorcycles. Billy Williamson fitted this engine into a frame with Douglas-Druid girder forks and a Douglas two-speed gearbox and a foot-operated clutch which was launched in 1912 at a cost of £82. In 1913 an air-cooled version was added to the range and in 1914 a kick starter was added. Production was halted by World War I and in 1919 the only engines available were JAP 980 cc air-cooled side valves, so Williamson redesigned the frame to fit.
